The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to terms with left wing Andrew Ladd on a three-year contract. The Hurricanes selected Ladd in the first-round, fourth overall, in the 2004 National Hockey League Entry Draft, held at the RBC Center, June 26-27, 2004.

"We're very pleased to have Andrew signed," said Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford. "He is a big, strong, aggressive player who should develop into a power forward who will play an important role in the future success of our franchise."

Ladd, 19, will receive $688,940 at the NHL level in the first two years of the contract, and $984,200 in the third year, the maximum rookie salary figures for players drafted in 2004 under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

In addition to his salary, Ladd receives a signing bonus of $590,520, to be paid in the first two years of the contract, and has the potential to earn the maximum entry-level performance bonuses, totaling $850,000 per year. The contract is a two-way contract, allowing Ladd to play in the American Hockey League at the rate of $70,300 per season.

In 2004-05, the 6-foot-2, 201-pound Ladd played his final season of junior hockey with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League. In 65 regular-season games, Ladd finished third on the team in scoring with 45 points while accumulating a team-high 167 penalty minutes.

Ladd also won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Grand Forks, ND, and Thief River Falls, Minn. In Canada's six games, Ladd scored three goals and added four assists, and finished the tournament ranked second with a plus-11 plus/minus rating

Good. We are a better team without Ladd. He's Carolina's problem now.
