Winter Hawks take over poll

Beating the pre-season favourites in their own barn earned the Portland Winter Hawks a measure of respect both on and off the ice as the Western Hockey League season sprang into action over the weekend.

The Hawks got a four-point night from 19-year-old Brandon Dubinsky Saturday as Portland won its season opener, 6-3, over the host Kelowna Rockets. They followed that up with a 5-2 win in Kamloops Sunday, and on Monday were picked as the top team in the WHL by 11 of 16 voters from the Western Major Junior Hockey Writers Association.

Kelowna, the pre-season favourite, got three first-place votes but only polled at No. 5, behind Calgary, Moose Jaw and Kootenay.

The WMJHWA is comprised of writers in each of the WHL's 20 cities, and releases polls weekly during the season.

A first-place vote is worth 20 points, with 19 for second, 18 for third and so on, down to one point for a last-place vote.

In the game against Kamloops the hawks looked very good, big defence and good forwards and they looked like everyone was on the same page so I guess its yours to loose

I never have liked polls at the beginning of the season. Probably because the first few weeks are not the greatest indication of how good teams really are (or aren't)

However I think Portland is a really good team this year
