The defending Western Hockey League Eastern Conference Champion Brandon Wheat Kings have announced the acquisition of 18-year old right-winger Bryan Kauk from the Kamloops Blazers.

In exchange for the 6’1” 180 lb Brandon native, the Blazers receive a sixth round pick in the 2007 WHL bantam draft.

A former member of the National Midget Champion AAA Wheat Kings, Kauk is expected to join the Wheat Kings on Friday in time for Brandon’s game against the Hurricanes in Lethbridge.

The addition of Kauk gives the Wheat Kings a total of ten local products including five former members of the 2004 National Champions, joining goalkeepers Kurt Jory and Tyler Plante as well as forwards Tyler Dittmer and Andrew Clark.

In 62 games last season – a year that was split between Medicine Hat and Kamloops – Kauk scored three goals, eighteen points and had 12 minutes in penalties.

Undrafted in the WHL, Kauk finished among the league leaders in scoring during his final year of midget, scoring 23 goals and 68 points in 29 games during the 2003-04 campaign.

Entering weekend play, the Wheat Kings have twenty-eight players on their roster – three goaltenders, nine defencemen and sixteen forwards.

Friday’s game is the first of three this weekend for Brandon, who play in Medicine Hat on Saturday night before closing out the 3-game affair in Cranbrook, B.C. on Sunday against the Kootenay Ice.
