LIGHTNING SIGN DEFENSEMAN ANDY ROGERS
TAMPA BAY - The 2004 Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning have signed
defenseman Andy Rogers to a standard three-year entry-level contract,
Executive Vice President and General Manager Jay Feaster announced today.
Rogers has been reassigned to Prince George of the Western Hockey League.
In accordance with club policy financial terms of the contract were not
disclosed.
"We are very pleased to have Andy under contract as we believe he has an
incredibly bright future with our organization," Feaster said. "He came
into training camp and through his play earned himself a contract now, as
opposed to us going through another full year of evaluating his play in
junior hockey. At the same time, it was the consensus of the coaching
staff that we would not be furthering his development by keeping him in
Tampa as the sixth defenseman right now. We want him to go back to Prince
George and have a big year for his team, make the Canadian National Jr.
Team, and help lead his team into the playoffs. We are confident that Andy
is going to have a very long career with the Lightning, and getting him
signed today and returning him to his junior team are the next steps on
what has been an incredibly positive path thus far."
The 19-year-old Calgary native appeared in five preseason games with
Tampa Bay, recording eight penalty minutes and a plus-1 rating. He Skated
in 48 games with Calgary and Prince George in 2004-05 and scored two
goals while handing out nine assists with 85 penalty minutes.
The Lightning selected the 6-foot-5, 201-pound blue-liner in the first
round, 30th overall, at the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
