The Swift Current Bronco's head coach, Dean Chynoweth, received a bench minor,10 min.misconduct, a gross misconduct and a game misconduct in tonight's match up against Kootney. The Kootney goalie ( Glass ) hammered a Bronco player with his blocker. The Bronco player fell to the ice looking dazed and not moving. Glass then went down and continued to hammer the Bronco player with his blocker. A melee broke out with the players on the ice. Glass then skated to the red line and removed his mask and gloves and challenged The Bronco goalie.

After everything cooled down, Glass only got 2 min. for roughing. Cheynoweth then proceeded to tell the ref that Glass should get more than a 2 min. for knocking out The Bronco player and starting the whole melee. The ref gave Dean a 2 min.bench minor. Dean then went balistic throwing water bottles at the ref. He then received 10,a game and a gross misconduct. The fans then proceeded to throw bottles and debris at the ref and Glass. R.C.M.P. were called in at the end of the game to escort the ref. out.

Ouch. Based on the description, Glass should have been tossed.

Add in a linesman getting dumped to the ice during a melee in Calgary, and the league offices are going to have a lot of video and reports to review this weekend.

I see Michael busto got a major-game for high sticking during that melee, and that there were uneven fighting majors - suggesting someone just beat the crap out of an unresisting opponent.

You figure there will be other suspensions out of this, beyond Chynoweth and possibly Glass?

I saw that! Wow I am sure that will come with a few games in the old press box, that was ugly.

From what I heard, the ref let the game get out of hand. Glass should have been tossed.

I interviewed Dean last month, he seemed pretty calm and relaxed guy then, so glasses actions must have warranted Chyner to lose his marbles.

Hopefully Glass gets lit up by the Canes on Sunday night.

Can't wait to watch my home town Ice face my new hometown Canes....should be a great game.

Dean Chynoweth doesn't usually come across as a coach who would lose it like that. Now if it was Sutter we were talking about then look out! He must have been tremendously upset with the decisions of the ref in this incident. A 2 minute penalty in the circumstances does sound way too leniant if Glass did as reported. Interesting to see what the league does about this.

Not going to make any excuses for Jeff Glass , but from what I have been hearing around here is that the player that he gave the ol bunter face wash was the guy that took out his brother who plays for the Tigers, (aparently with a cheap shot) Now blood runs deep and he probably wanted a bit of revenge for him. I also heard that the two of them were beeking it up with each other prior to that so who knows what might have been said. Probably deserved more than 2 minutes but I am glad to see him stick up for his Brother.

It doesn't surprise me that Dean lost it. If you ever saw him out there on the ice you know he was the type of guy that would be capable of that. :D

Who was the stripe that did this game? Just woundering if it was one of the usual boneheads or someone pushing to move up in the idiot ranks.

The ref was Ryan Thompson. I'm not too familiar with as he hasn't reffed any games in Regina.

And I don't blame Chynoweth for losing it. If Glass infact did blocker Murray the way people have been describing, it should be considered a gross misconduct. There is no way that if someone is using they're blocker to hit someone, let alone several times, that it's not intent to injure. Slade learned that the hard way and recieved numerous suspensions for seperate incidents. This should be treated no differently. If I were Chynoweth, I would have flipped out too, because a 2 min roughing penalty is rediculous. If Glass ins't suspended or anything, then there is something wrong with the league. Im sure we will find out tommorow what happens.

And my opinions are based on what I've read from posters who witnessed it.

Goalie's using there blockers should be either kicked out of the game or suspended. You can do alot of damage pretty quick with one of them.

I played goal and even in the old, old style of hockey, (in the days of only one goaltender), If you used your blocker on another player it was considered a delibireate attempt to injure and resulted in a gross misconduct, and the team had to find some stupid forward to finish the game in net. A very serious offence then, and better still be. This should cost him a pile of games when it's reviewed.

I to am basing this only from all the reports I've heard, some of which were from people who were @ the game but could be somewhat bias.

Agreed. Such an attack should be treated equal to a spear or butt end.

It's pretty hard to be biased when a goalie uses his blocker as a weapon. Glass even admitted in a radio interview he thought he would be ejected for his actions and may be under a league imposed suspension until it was reviewed. He admitted he was just as surprised as everyone else at only getting 2 min. That tells me he knew what he did and he knew what the ramifications would be. He never did say why he did it, but most are saying pay back for what he did to his brother. I posted a longer view of the incident on the Bronco site in the team forums.

Any news of any action from the league with regards to this situation? I haven't seen anything on their website yet but you would think that some kind of discipline will be handed out to the coach and player.

They announced on sports that Dean is under a league imposed suspension until the league reviews the tapes. It should be interesting what they see in this tape and if they say anything about the blocker attack. Can a ref be suspended for loosing control or is that kept hush hush.

I really doubt whether we would hear anything about a ref being disciplined. They like to keep that sort of thing in-house usually.

I doubt the league would ever announce the suspension of a referee. More likely, in such an instance, the league would simply rewrite the weekly assignments to exclude an official for a short period of time, and nobody would ever notice.

The league should announce it though.

It would say to the fans, IE. the people who pay them all, that they are taking it seriously and doing something about it.

Dean got 2 games and fined i think $250.00. Glass got nothing.
