Silvertips Squeeze by Winterhawks
Everett Comes Home on Top 5-4
Everett Silvertips Press Release

Portland, OR - Tonight at the Rose Garden in Portland, OR the Everett Silvertips squeezed by the Portland Winterhawks by a final score of 5-4. It was an exciting and high scoring game that ended with Jonathan Harty getting the game winner. This is the first of twelve meetings between these two teams and Everett jumps ahead 1-0. Everett remains in first place in the US Division with 14 points and a record of 7-4. Portland stays in second with 10 points and a 5-5 record.

Portland had Everett chasing them most of the game with the Winterhawks taking, and subsequently losing, the lead three different times. The only time the Silvertips led on the scoreboard was after Jonathan Harty's goal late in the third, which ended up being the clincher.

The Winterhawks drew first blood with a short-handed Sasha Golin tally eight minutes into the first. Everett responded with their own short-handed goal three minutes later by Peter Mueller on an unassisted shot. Golin bit back at 14:05 to push Portland up 2-1 but the Silvertips turned around and tied it up at two a piece 14 seconds later.

The Winterhawks regained the lead for the third, and final, time with two goals in the first 13 minutes of the second period. Kyle Bailey and Jon Bubnick recorded the tallies. Everett jumped back into the game and put up two of their own tallies less than a minute apart. Brady Calla earned his second on the night while John Lammers posted the fourth Everett goal.

Harty's game winner came at 15:36 of the third which finished the game. Earning assists for tonight's game were Brady Calla, Zach Hamill and John Lammers all with two a piece and Karel Hromas and Mark Kress with one.

Leland Irving made his 11th straight start for tonight's game but was relieved at 2:14 of the second period. In the 22 minutes he played Irving stopped 10 of 13 shots. Rookie Matt Esposito replaced Everett's starting goalie and proceeded to only let in one of 15 shots and earned his first win in the Western Hockey League. In the pipes for Portland was Luke Shier. Shier made 35 saves on 40 shots but in the end drops his record to 1-2. On the power play both teams went 1 for 5. Once again Everett out shot their opponent, this time by a margin of 40-28.

The Everett Silvertips are back at home on Wednesday, October 26th, where they will once again see the Portland Winterhawks. The two teams face off at 7:05pm.

Tips beat Hawks in wild game
Everett extends first-place lead to four points

Herald staff

PORTLAND, Ore. - In their first meeting of the season, the Everett Silvertips and Portland Winter Hawks played a game just as wild and exciting as the teams' first-round playoff series last season.

And just like that playoff series, it was the Silvertips who prevailed in the end.

Jonathan Harty scored the game-winning goal late in the third period, and Everett defeated Portland 5-4 Sunday night at the Rose Garden.

In a frantic game in which Everett trailed three times and never led until Harty's goal, the Silvertips (7-4) extended their lead over Portland (5-5) to four points for first place in the U.S. Division.

With the teams playing four-on-four with 15 minutes, 36 seconds remaining in the third period, Harty floated in from the left point and fed Mark Kress, whose shot hit the post. But Harty put in the rebound to complete Everett's comeback from a 4-2 deficit.

Brady Calla had two goals and two assists, Peter Mueller and John Lammers also scored and Zach Hamill had two assists for Everett, which beat Portland in seven games in the playoffs last season.

Goaltender Matt Esposito, who came on in relief of Leland Irving early in the second period, made 14 saves to earn his first victory in the Western Hockey League. Irving, who has started every game for Everett this season, gave up three goals on 13 shots before being pulled with 1:58 to play in the second.

Sasha Golin had two goals, Kyle Bailey and Jonathan Bubnick also scored and Luke Shier made 35 saves in goal for Portland.

The teams traded goals during a wild first period that ended 2-2. Golin scored the first of his goals at 8:03 on a short-handed breakaway, giving Portland a 1-0 lead. However, Mueller tied it up for Everett 2:56 later on a short-handed breakaway of his own. Golin scored again with 14:05 to go when his shot on the rush deflected past Irving, making it 2-1. But Everett needed just 14 seconds to tie it again, Hamill finding Calla on an odd-man rush and Calla putting the putt in goal.

The wildness continued in the second. Portland surged ahead 4-2, Bailey scoring from in front at 1:58 and Bubnick scoring on a one-timer from the slot on the power play at 12:39. But Everett battled back again to tie it. Calla scored his second of the game at 15:19, forcing the puck in during a scrum out front. With 16:10 remaining in the period, a Lammers' shot found its way through Shier after a feed from Hamill, making it 4-4.

Everett called forward Damir Alic up for Sunday's game. Alic, a Kent resident who was one of the team's final cuts following training camp, became the first Washington resident to play for the Silvertips. He helped fill out a lineup that was without forward Ondrej Fiala, out indefinitely with a knee injury, and right wing Jesse Smyke and defenseman Cody Thoring, who were both scratched with minor injuries.

Portland played without defenseman Michael Sauer, who's been out with a shoulder injury, as well as right wing Jannik Hansen and defenseman Garth Collins, who were each suspended.

Jonathon Harty scored off a rebound with 4 minutes, 34 seconds remaining to give the Everett Silvertips a 5-4 win over the Portland Winter Hawks last night in front of 6,345 at the Rose Garden.

Brady Calla had two goals and two assists for the Silvertips (7-4-0-0), who overcame a 4-2 deficit midway through the second period for their sixth win in the past seven games.

Everett extended its lead atop the U.S. Division to four points over Portland. The two teams have a rematch set for Wednesday in the Everett Events Center.

Calla didn't waste much time in erasing the Winter Hawks' two-goal lead. At 15:19 of the second period, he scored a power-play goal to trim the deficit to one, 4-3. Less than a minute later, Calla set up the tying goal by John Lammers.

In the third period, Everett's Mark Kress won a faceoff in the Portland zone to start the sequence toward the winning goal. A quick entry shot placed the puck in front of the net, Kress hit the crossbar, and Harty scored on the rebound.

The Silvertips' Peter Mueller tied the score at 1-1 on a short-handed goal in the first period. Portland regained the lead, 2-1, on right wing Sasha Golin's second goal of the period three minutes later.

But Calla tied the score at 2-2 with a goal 14 seconds later.

Everett 5, Portland 4 - Backup goalie comes through for Silvertips
Monday, October 24, 2005
MOLLY BLUE
Matt Esposito is a 5-foot-7 backup goaltender for the Everett Silvertips who played a total of two minutes and hadn't faced a shot this season before Sunday's game against the Portland Winter Hawks.

But when Everett coach Kevin Constantine called on him early in the second period, Esposito responded with 16 saves on 17 shots, and at the other end, right wing Brady Calla had two goals and two assists to lead the Silvertips to a 5-4 win against U.S. Division rival Portland before 6,345 fans at the Rose Garden.

Portland pounded Everett starter Leland Irving, who came into the game ranked second in the Western Hockey League in goals against average (1.82). Constantine pulled Irving after the Winter Hawks scored three goals on their first 11 shots.

Winter Hawks right wing Sasha Golin had two of those goals and was around the net on most of his shifts. The first goal came off a turnover along the boards. Golin gathered it, skated across the crease and beat Leland to his left at 8 minutes, 3 seconds for a shorthanded score. The second goal came after Everett tied the score. Golin shot the puck from the slot, converting a pass from center Stanislav Balan.

Center Kyle Bailey gave Portland a 3-2 lead after he broke his stick, picked one up from the bench on the fly and jumped back into the play just in time to pick up a nifty pass from left wing Brayden Nargang and slide it past Irving less than two minutes into the second period.

That was all for Irving. Constantine had seen enough.

"I pulled him for two reasons. He wasn't very sharp, and he's played in 11 straight games," Constantine said. "It was time to give him a break. And Esposito played very well for us in training camp. Leland's the starter, he's paid his dues, but Esposito was our best goaltender through training camp."

Right wing Jonathan Bubnick blasted the first shot Esposito faced past him on a thunderous power play slap shot set up by defenseman Cameron Cepek, putting Portland ahead 4-2 at 12:39.

But as he settled down, Esposito shut down Portland's offense, which finished the second period with five shots to Everett's 18.

"We barely tested him," Golin said. "We get the lead, then we get too comfortable, and it bites us."

At the other end, Portland goaltender Luke Shier was acrobatic in the first half of the game, diving for saves and holding off a 5-on-3 Everett power play. But he gave up two goals in less than a minute -- one off an Everett power play he caused when he was penalized for playing the puck outside the box, and the next one, 51 seconds later, that made the score 4-4.

"Luke made some great saves, but there were two in the second that he should have covered," Hawks coach Mike Williamson said. "He must do a better job on rebounds."

Everett defenseman Jonathan Harty scored the winner at 15:36 of the third, off a Portland turnover, after he slipped past the Hawks' defense and gathered a backhand pass from Mark Kress for the shot.

The Silvertips outshot Portland 40-28.

The loss was the second in a row for Portland (5-5-0-0). Everett (7-4-0-0) tightened its grip on first place in the U.S. Division with the win.

Note:

Jannik Hansen, the Hawks' 19-year-old left wing, and Garth Collins, an 18-year-old Portland defenseman, were suspended by the league and were ineligible for Sunday's game. The Winter Hawks won't know until at least today how long they will be out. Hansen was suspended for a hit he made on Seattle's Ryan Gibbons on Saturday. Collins' suspension was the result of a fight.
