I got this from a well respected poster who saw the hit on Yonkman in Calgary:
Moscaluk made no attempt to avoid hitting Yonkman and in fact I thought it was
pretty intentional on his part. I doubt there was any intent to injure but
Moscaluk lost the race for the puck and bowled Yonkman over. He probably would
have made some contact even if he had won the race but there was never any
attempt to avoid it. Yonkman was in the top of the faceoff circle so he was
nowhere near his crease but we know the goalie isn't fair game even when they
aren't. Too bad for Yonkman, he was doing well up to that point in the game
after a tough start to the season. He did look shaky but he was making the
stops.
Karl Benke jumped on Moscaluk right after the hit and they had a short fight,
only good punch was a straight right to Benke's nose by Moscaluk. Didn't
phase Benke though, good on him for sticking up for his goalie. They both got
five, Benke got the instigator and Moscaluk got a major for the hit plus a
game misconduct so the Broncos got a 3-minute powerplay out of it that they
used to score the winning goal.
A suspension was warranted. Whether five games was warranted is what I'd have
to question....that seems pretty stiff considering some of the suspensions the
league has handed out (or not handed out) in the past for worse incidents.
As far as I can recall, this is the longest suspension ever given to a Hitmen
player by the league. And it's not close to the stupidest thing a Hitmen
player has even done. The most blatant attempt to injure by a Hitmen player
I've ever seen was Wes Rypien cross-checking BJ Boxma in the head and he got
three games for that. So.....how does the league figure this stuff out anyway.
