Everett’s Winning Streak Extends to Three
The Silvertips Defeat the Winterhawks 3-1
Everett Silvertips Press Release

Leland Irving #1 Star Of The Game
Everett, WA - Tonight the Everett Silvertips extend their winning streak to 3 with a 3-1 win over the Portland Winterhawks. Everett is firmly in first place in the US Division with 16 points and a record of 8-4. Portland is tied with Spokane for second place with 10 points and a record of 5-6. This is the second meeting between these clubs and the Silvertips lead the regular season series 2-0 with one win at home and one on the road.

John Lammers added goal number six to his statistics at 6:28 of the first period while the Silvertips were on their first power play of the night. The goal, controversial because the puck bounced in and out near the left post, was assisted by Brady Calla and Cody Thoring. Portland tied up the scoreboard with under two minutes to go in the second period with the goal coming from Kyle Bailey and the assist being put up by Michael Funk. Everett bounced back on top early in the third with the tally coming from Karel Hromas. He also earns his sixth on the year. Peter Mueller and Zack Dailey earned both assists. Finally, at 18:24 of the final period, Brady Calla sent in an empty-netter to finalize the game at 3-1. John Lammers tallied the lone assist.

Between the pipes for the Silvertips was Leland Irving. Irving was a wall, letting in only one shot on 23. His record rises to 7-4. Portland veteran Dustin Butler stopped 26 of 28 shots and drops his record to 4-3. On the power play Everett went 1 for 5 while Portland went 0 for 4. The Silvertips out shot the Winterhawks 29-23 in the hockey game.

The Silvertips travel north to face off against the Vancouver Giants on Friday, October 28th. This is the first meeting in regular season between these two teams. The puck drops at 7:30pm.

The pass Mueller made to Hromas for the second goal was one of the sweetest passes I have ever seen by a Tip player. Zach Dailey was impressive again last night in the start. I think we are really starting to play very good hockey. We look really good against bigger teams. We still need some protection though.

Dailey is a scrappy, quick, small 16-year-old that needs to put on a few pounds. He seems to handle the puck well if he has a step on the defender, but he can't get through people like Mueller or Lammers does. At least not yet. I was really pulling for him to get that 1st goal on the breakaway chance he had. Not to be, though. Did you notice when he got announced in the starting line-up he got a bigger ovation than anyone....even Mueller? Nice to see his hard work being rewarded by getting the start on the #1 line with Mueller due to Wheat's injury.

Silvertips stay hot with third win in a row, 3-1 over Portland
By Jim Riley

Special to The Seattle Times

EVERETT — As captain Torrie Wheat watched from a seat at the top of the Everett Events Center, the Everett Silvertips dug out an emotional 3-1 victory over the Portland Winter Hawks on Wednesday night.

The Silvertips (8-4-0-0) won their third in a row and for the seventh time in eight games to pad their lead in the U.S. Division to six points over the Winter Hawks (5-6-0-0).

Wheat, the all-time leading scorer in franchise history who has seven goals already this season, completely severed a ligament in his knee in a game last Sunday and has begun physical therapy. He is walking with a brace but won't need surgery and is expected to be out six weeks.

Zack Dailey, who along with Shane Harper took over on Wheat's line with Karel Hromas and Peter Mueller, contributed an assist on Hromas' game-winning goal.

The score came after a dazzling cross-ice pass from Mueller, a rookie who had his team-high 14th assist of the season.

Everett coach and general manager Kevin Constantine, rarely prone to hyperbole, called Mueller's pass "simply brilliant.

"He could have had two goals earlier in the game, and I think he was getting a little frustrated," Constantine said. "He hung in there and made a brilliant play down the stretch when we needed it."

Hromas' goal, his third game-winner of the season, snapped a 1-1 tie and came at the 5:36 mark of the third period. Brady Calla added an empty-net goal for the Silvertips, who outshot Portland 29-23.

The Silvertips dominated play after the national anthem, outshooting Portland at one point 9-0 in the first period.

The only goal of the first session came from Everett's John Lammers on a long shot from the point on the power play. Lammers, who now has six goals this season, blocked a clearing attempt at the blue line with his chest and turned around and fired.

Portland goaltender Dustin Butler never moved as the puck went into the back of the net.

The Winter Hawks tied the game with 1:45 left in the second period on an even-strength goal by Kyle Bailey, his fourth of the season.

Lammers, getting his first taste of the rivalry with Portland, felt the Silvertips could have had a more consistent effort.

"We could have been a lot better tonight," Lammers said. "We've got a lot more, but both teams played really hard. We just kind of got away from the basics for a while but came back in the third and got the job done."

Lammers said losing Wheat was a blow.

"That was only one game, and we know it won't be easy," Lammers said. "He brings so much to the table for us. We all feel really badly for him, but he's a great kid and we all know he's going to come back better than ever."

Mueller's magic sparks Tips to victory
Everett's 3-1 win over Portland strengthens the Tips' hold on first place.

By Nick Patterson
Herald Writer

EVERETT - One moment of brilliance from Peter Mueller. One glimpse of the skill that has many heralding Mueller as a lottery pick in next year's NHL Draft.

And with that moment the Everett Silvertips stamped their mark as front-runners in the Western Hockey League's U.S. Division.

Mueller's perfect defense-splitting pass set up Karel Hromas' tiebreaking goal early in the third period, and the Silvertips served notice of where they expect to be at the end of the season, defeating the Portland Winter Hawks 3-1 Wednesday night.

The victory was Everett's second over Portland in four days and put the Silvertips (8-4) six points ahead of the Winter Hawks (5-6) for first place in the division.

"It feels great," Everett's Brady Calla, who had an empty-net goal and an assist, said about the two wins over Portland. "They're a very hard-working team and they got the best of us at times. But we just tried to stick to our game plan as best we could."

John Lammers also had a goal and an assist for Everett and Leland Irving had a strong game in goal, turning away 22 shots.

But it was Mueller's mesmerizing moment that made the difference in the game.

With the score tied 1-1, Mueller and Hromas skated out on a two-on-two break. Mueller skated into the offensive zone on the right, then threaded a perfect pass behind the Portland defense and in front of Winter Hawks goaltender Dustin Butler to the far post. Hromas met the puck at full speed and tipped it in to give Everett the lead.

"I was trying to read what the defenseman was doing and he backed off a little bit," Mueller said. "I saw Karel streaking, I held onto the puck and luckily he was there to tap it in."

"Brilliant," was how Everett coach Kevin Constantine described Mueller's pass. "Peter could have had two goals earlier and I think he was a little frustrated up till then. He hung in there and made a brilliant play down the stretch."

Everett, playing its first game without injured captain Torrie Wheat, still managed to win for the seventh time in its past eight games. With the back-to-back victories over Portland, picked by many as the preseason favorite in the division, Everett made a strong statement toward U.S. Division supremacy - though the Silvertips aren't ready to say it just yet.

"You can put a mark on a timeline," Constantine said. "After 12 games here's where you are. If you'd have predicted this is where we'd be at this time of year we'd probably have been reasonably satisfied with that. But it's just a mark on the timeline and it's not the important mark. It's where we are at the end that's important."

Kyle Bailey scored and Butler made 26 saves in goal for Portland, which has lost three straight.

"Our team is struggling right now," Portland coach Mike Williamson said. "We're a good hockey team that's not playing well and we have to do something to get us going. We're facing some adversity right now and instead of our core guys buckling down and doing the little things, it's going the other way and we're losing games because of it."

The first 10 minutes were all Everett and the Silvertips took the lead after 6:28, although not without controversy. Lammers' shot from the center point on the power play beat Butler and drew iron. Lammers reacted like it was a goal, but play continued. However, after the puck was frozen, the officials huddled and the goal was awarded, much to the ire of Williamson.

In the second period both teams drew iron and the Winter Hawks had what they thought was a goal called off. But Portland did find the net at 18:15, as Bailey beat Irving high to the near side with a shot from the left circle to make it 1-1.

Slap shots: Everett suited up seven defensemen Wednesday. Taylor Ellington was back in the lineup and Zach Sim saw time at forward. ... Portland played without right wing Jannik Hansen, who is suspended, and defenseman Michael Sauer, who's nursing a shoulder injury. ... Portland goaltender Luke Shier, who was in net when Everett won 5-4 in Portland on Sunday, has been sent home. Shier, who played in three of Portland's first 10 games, was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.
