"Cole exceeded expectations" says McCrimmon

Brandon, Manitoba – The Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings have announced that 19-year old left-winger Cole Hunter is the Tip Top Tailors Player of the Month for September and October.

A former tenth round draft choice of the Swift Current Broncos in 2001, Hunter joined the Wheat Kings in December, 2004 after spending a year and half with the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s OCN Blizzard.

Entering this weekend’s mini 2-game WHL home stand at the Keystone Centre, Hunter has played in seventeen of Brandon’s first 18 games, scoring three goals, four points and accumulating fourteen minutes in penalties during the first six weeks of the 2005-06 regular season.

Hunter’s highlight of the month came on October 12th at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary. The former Brandon AAA midget Wheat King had his first ever multi-goal game – scoring twice – in a 4-3 loss to the Hitmen.

“I think Cole was one player who exceeded expectations during the first month of the season,” says Brandon general manager and coach Kelly McCrimmon. “A good two way player, he played a valuable role in five on five as well as in penalty kill situations.”

Cole’s play this past month….especially killing penalties has been instrumental in the team’s improvement in that area recently,” says Brandon assistant coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk. “A solid two-way player, Cole was very solid last month and seems to be getting better with each game.”

One of nine local products on this year’s club, Cole was among the league’s scoring leaders when he was recalled from OCN last winter. In 26 games with the Wheat Kings last year, the 6’3” 201 lb Hunter had one assist and 15 penalty minutes.

In recognition of the honour, Cole will receive a shirt, tie and suit from Tip Top Tailors in the Shoppers Mall, the official menswear clothier of the Wheat Kings during Sunday night’s game against the visiting Saskatoon Blades.

Tickets to this weekend’s games against Swift Current on Saturday and Saskatoon on Sunday are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or by going on line at ticketmaster.ca

This weekend’s game are also Sport Chek Family Nights. The Sport Chek Family Night package includes two adult, two youth tickets, four hot dogs, four soft drinks and four programs for just $40 and are available at Sport Chek at Shoppers Mall Brandon.

Sunday is also the first Rain Check Night of the 2005-06 season. Any unused ticket can be exchanged at the box office for a “free” ticket to this game.
