Silvertips win in a shootout

Herald staff

RED DEER, Alberta - How well are things going for the Everett Silvertips right now? So well that they find ways to prevail, even when they have no business winning.

Jonathan Harty scored an improbable game-tying goal late, and the Silvertips went on to win in a shootout, defeating the Red Deer Rebels 2-1 to keep their franchise-record winning streak intact at eight games.

Peter Mueller and Zach Hamill scored in the shootout as Everett prevailed 2-1.

But for nearly 58 minutes it appeared as if Andrew Leslie, who had been perfect in goal for Red Deer, and the Rebels were going to halt Everett's streak at seven.

The game seemed all but over when Everett's Mark Kress took a delay-of-game penalty with 2:19 remaining. But 10 seconds into the power play Harty took the puck down the ice two-on-two, made a great move into the zone, crashed the net and scored an unlikely short-handed goal, tying it up at 1-1 and forcing overtime.

Everett goaltender Leland Irving made a string of great saves in overtime to force the shootout, then made an even better save on Kris Versteeg in the shootout to set up the victory. Hamill made his shot to give the Tips a 2-1 lead, then Red Deer's Jordan Knackstedt was unable to get the final shot off, giving Everett the win.

Irving finished with 25 saves for Everett (13-4), which has won 12 of its past 13.

Brandon Sutter scored and Leslie finished with 26 saves for Red Deer (5-13-0-1), which lost its seventh straight. Roman Wick scored in the shootout for the Rebels.

Red Deer put itself in position to win with its penalty killing. The Rebels came into the game with the worst penalty kill in the Western Hockey League, and Everett came into the game with the best power play in the league. However, Everett failed to score on any of its five power-play opportunities.

Neither team was able to score in the first period. The best chance came during an Everett five-on-three advantage when Shaun Heshka hit the post with a shot from the point.

Red Deer then took the lead with a power-play goal 5:10 into the second period, Sutter's shot through a screen finding the net to make it 1-0. It was the first time Everett trailed in a game since Oct. 23, when the Tips fell behind Portland 4-2 before coming back to win 5-4.

The Rebels could have led by more after two periods, but Brennan Chapman hit a post and Versteeg rapped the crossbar with a shot he claimed was a goal.

The Tips had a golden opportunity to tie it in the third period, but Hamill shot wide on a rebound with the net gaping. But that just set up the thrilling end.

Everett's newest player, right wing Boris Leckovic who arrived in a trade with Swift Current, did not suit up as he begins learning Everett's systems.
