Pats Move Into First Place Tie

A quarter way through the season the Regina Pats & Moose Jaw Warriors find themselves in a tie a top the WHL's East Division after the Pats held on to win 5 - 4 over their Highway # 1 rivals in front of 4,710 at Brandt Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Twenty-year-old Denis Tolpeko led the Pats offensively with a goal and three assists and helped improve the Pats record at Brandt Centre to 11-2-0-0.

It didn't take long for the Pats to hit the scoreboard with Tolpeko firing a bullet past Joey Perricone 2:34 into the opening stanza.

Riley Holzapfel took a nice cross-ice pass from Bjorn Svennson and tied the score beating David Reekie.

Denis Tolpeko made a solid body check on a Moose Jaw defender then great back hand pass from behind the net to a wide open Justin Bernhardt who beat Perricone to restore the Pats one goal advantage.

Craig Schira made a nice play keeping a Warrior clearing attempt in their zone and found Kyle Ross who zipped a wrist shot to extend the Pats lead to two goals.

The second period remained scoreless until 4:20 left on the clock when Troy Brouwer capitalized on a mishandled clearing attempt by Reekie while on the power play. The shorthanded goal was the third of the season surrendered by the Pats.

The momentum from Brower's goal was short lived as Kyle Ross responded for the Pats nineteen seconds later capitalizing on a juicy rebound shot from Nick Ross to give the Pats a 4 - 2 lead.

Josh Lepp came on in relief of Perricone to start the third period and made a number of key saves early but was beaten by Justin Bernhardt who took advantage of another fine play by Tolpeko to score the game winning goal.

Brennan Wray put a backhand shot in the back of the Pats net with 9:15 remaining in the third to draw the Warriors within two, but Reekie made a number of key saves and was able to hold off the Warriors until thirty-three seconds remaining when Dustin Boyd scored with an extra-attacker on the ice.

Reekie, who made his first start since October 28th after suffering from a groin injury, made thirty saves in the victory.

Perricone & Lepp combined to make twenty-one saves in defeat.
