Bronco Week In Review: The Broncos walked into 3 games this week, consisting of 1 game at home and 2 games on the road. On Wednesday night, the club was home to Devin Setoguchi and the Saskatoon Blades. On the weekend, the Broncos traveled East to Regina for a game against the Pats on Friday night and then continued down the Trans-Canada Highway, eventually ending up in Brandon for a tilt against the Wheat Kings on Saturday night.
On Wednesday, the Saskatoon Blades brought their new look jerseys, and their new look team into town. Devin Setoguchi, the 8th overall selection of the San Jose Sharks in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, opened the scoring with a floating shot past Broncos net-minder Kyle Moir just 5:11 into the 1st period. The score remained that way through the remainder of the 1st period. In the 2nd period, Blades forward Blair MacAulay scored the 2nd goal of the game past Kyle Moir, giving Saskatoon a 2-0 lead heading into the 3rd period. From there, the Blades took over even further, scoring 3 more unanswered goals. Just McCrae and Ryan Menei scored within 3 minutes of the 3rd period, chasing goaltender Kyle Moir out of his net, who was replaced by newly acquired Brant Hilton. Kyle Moir allowed 4 goals on 25 Saskatoon shots. At the 7:57 mark of the 3rd period, emotions ran high as the Broncos were involved in their 1st line-brawl of the season. A total of 117 penalty minutes were issued in the line-brawl, resulting in 6 game misconducts. More hockey was left to be played, however, and Devin Setoguchi once again tickled the twine, using a slap-shot to go off the cross-bar and in. Levi Nelson would eventually break the shutout bid of Saskatoon goalie Kevin Armstrong, but it would not be enough as the Blades skated away with a 5-1 win. The Blades out-shot the Broncos 32-30 in the contest and both teams power-play units were cold with the Broncos going 0 for 5 and the Blades 0 for 4. A total of 1,849 people took in the game on Wednesday.

On Friday night, the Broncos headed into Regina for their 2nd battle against the Pats this season. The Broncos suffered a 2-1 loss on September 28th in Regina. The Broncos would get off to an early lead on Friday night, receiving a goal from Daniel Rakos, his first in the Western Hockey League. Rakos' goal was on the power-play and was scored at the 10:28 mark of the 1st period. Jeremy Schenderling would follow Rakos, scoring his 10th goal of the season while shorthanded. The Broncos, however, allowed the Pats to get back into the game with 4 unanswered goals. Kyle Ross opened the scoring for the Pats just 0:22 seconds into the 2nd period and was followed by Logan Pyett, Petr Kalus (PP), and Justin Bernhardt. Broncos rookie Kyle Bortis would score with just 0:32 seconds remaining in the game, however, it would not be enough as the Pats stole a 4-3 victory from the Broncos on Friday night. The Broncos were slightly out-shot in the contest, 25-22 in favour of Regina. Both teams managed to score 1 goal on the power-play with the Broncos going 1 for 6 and the Pats 1 for 7. A total of 4,061 people were in attendance at the Brandt Center on Friday night.

Concluding the week, the Broncos traveled to Brandon on Saturday night to take on the Wheat Kings. The Wheat Kings opened the scoring with 14:49 gone in the 1st period when veteran forward Derek LeBlanc put one past Kyle Moir. The Broncos, however, would respond before the period was over scoring 2 quick goals. Spencer McAvoy scored at the 16:03 mark of the 1st period and Andrew Wasmuth netted his 3rd goal of the season just 1:03 later. McAvoy's goal was the 1st of his Western Hockey League career. The Broncos, again would head into the 2nd period with a lead, this time 2-1 despite being out-shot 13-9. In the 2nd, Brandon would re-gain the lead with goals from Ryan Reaves and Derek LeBlanc at the 1:52 and 4:39 marks respectively. The Bronocs, however, would rally, receiving a power-play goal from Levi Nelson on a beautiful setup from Ned Lukacevic. With the game tied 3-3, Brandon went on a tear scoring 3 goals in just 50 seconds. Mark Derlago, Daryl Boyle, and Ryan Reaves would all solve Kyle Moir in the 50 seconds and would chase Moir from the net, who was again replaced by Brant Hilton. Moir allowed 6 Brandon goals on 25 shots. Heading into the 3rd with a 6-3 lead, Brandon managed to expand their cushion with a hat-trick goal from Derek LeBlanc. Jeremy Schenderling would score a shorthanded goal, his second of the week, with 7:59 gone in the 3rd period, however, Mark Derlago would put a stop to any Bronco momentum with 2 minutes remaining in the game when he scored his 2nd of the night. Schenderling would add another for the Broncos late in the game to make the final score 8-5 on Saturday night. The Broncos were out-shot 41-30 in the contest. No worries. Broncos West took all we didn't need here in Broncos East. With our scoring problems starting to settle down, it should make for a pretty good game Wednesday. (Provided we don't choke in the second period again).
