Brandon, Manitoba – Last year’s winner of the Western Hockey League Rookie of the Year honours is this season’s first segment winner in the Brandon Wheat Kings’ Molson Cup Three Star Program.

During the season’s first segment, which ended this past weekend, 18-year old goalkeeper Tyler Plante collected 20 Molson Cup points to edge out 19-year old Derek LeBlanc. The club’s scoring leader with nine goals and 15 points in 20 games finished the opening segment of the 2005-06 season with fifteen Molson Cup points.

Entering Wednesday night’s game against the first place Warriors in Moose Jaw, Plante has appeared in seventeen of Brandon’s first 20 games, compiling a 4.23 goals against average, an .898 save percentage and a record of 5-9-3.

A former member of the 2004 National midget champion AAA Wheat Kings, the second round draft choice of the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers was instrumental in the Wheat Kings winning their third WHL Eastern Division pennant in four years and their first Conference title since 1998 last winter. In addition to being named the league’s Top Rookie, the 6’3” 202 lb local product established two club records – for shutouts in a single season (6) and best goals against average (2.58).

The Molson Cup evolved from one of hockey’s oldest traditions – the selection of the stars of the game. The Molson Cup is presented annually to the major junior hockey player on each team that receives the most player of the game points in all home and away regular season games.

A special presentation to Tyler will be made by Molson Canada representative Val Robertson during Friday night’s game at the Keystone Centre against the visiting Saskatoon Blades.

Plante and the Wheat Kings enter Wednesday night’s game with a record of 5-12-2-1, good for thirteen points and a fourth place tie with the Prince Albert Raiders in the Eastern Division. Brandon has collected at least a point in three straight games and is coming off Sunday’s disappointing 3-2 overtime loss to Saskatoon.
