Late goal helps Tips past Broncos
Last-second goal ties score, Everett wins 2-1 in shootout

SWIFT CURRENT, Saskatchewan - It took a miracle goal for the Everett Silvertips to finally break out of their offensive malaise.

Jason Fransoo scored an unlikely tying goal with just 1.9 seconds remaining in regulation, and the Silvertips went on to win in a shootout, defeating the Swift Current Broncos 2-1 Wednesday night.

Everett had scored just four goals in its previous three games, and the offensive frustration continued as the Silvertips were stymied by Swift Current goaltender Kyle Moir for more than 59 minutes Wednesday.

But with time winding down Fransoo, a former Bronco, got to the puck behind the Swift Current goal and threw the puck out front, where it deflected off a skate and into the net to force overtime.

After a scoreless overtime, Peter Mueller and John Lammers scored for Everett in the shootout and Leland Irving saved both shots he faced as the Tips prevailed 2-0. Everett is a perfect 3-0 in shootouts this season.

Irving finished with 19 saves and 15-year-old Kyle Beach recorded an assist, giving him points in each of his first two Western Hockey League games, as Everett (14-6-0-0) snapped a two-game losing streak.

Kyle Bortis scored and Moir made 30 saves for Swift Current (6-11-0-3), which lost its fourth straight.

Everett nearly didn't have the opportunity to tie it as Swift Current had several chances with Irving pulled for an extra attacker. But Jeremy Schenderling twice shot wide at the empty net, and Brady Calla made a hustle play late to break up a chance and start the play that resulted in the tying goal.

The Tips nearly won it in overtime when Mark Kress hit the underside of the crossbar. But the shootout has been kind to the Tips, who have scored on six of their eight shootout attempts this season.

Everett, which managed just nine shots on goal in its 3-1 loss at Medicine Hat on Tuesday, started slow again Wednesday. But this time its opponent also started slow as both teams managed just three shots in a scoreless first period.

The action picked up in the second period, with Irving having to make a big save on Ned Lukacevic skating in on goal, and the Tips nearly getting a gift goal when a bad hop off the boards whistled just wide with Moir stranded.

But it was Swift Current that eventually broke through. On a Swift Current power play at 13:24 in the second period, Irving saved Daniel Rakos' shot from the point, but Bortis was on hand to put in the rebound, giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

From there the Tips turned up the pressure, creating a slew of scoring chances, but they were all turned away by Moir. Everett's futility included 1:19 of a five-on-three advantage that spanned the second and third periods. But fate intervened at the end as the Tips scored the tying goal on a fortunate deflection.

Talk about a heartbreaking game too. I'll get into the loss a little later for Swift Current, but first I have to say a few things.

First off, the Silvertips defense may be one of the best I have seen all year, absolutly amazing. It's good to see Fransoo doing such a great job for you guys. He showed a lot of promise when he played here and he has a great mind for the game.

Second, way to go Silvertips fans. It has to take a dedicated group to come all the way from Everett for an Eastern swing. Good team spirit from you guys, nice to see the fans all stick together. And what a friendly group of people. You guys are welcome here any game.

Finally, what an odd and boring game. Hardly any shots taken, most action was in the Broncos zone, Everett could hardly get any shots on net, and both teams just played the dump and chase game all night. To be honest, neither team deserved to score at all. It was just a bad game altogether.

If anyone had to score the tying goal, glad it was Fransoo if anyone. I've always been a fan of his. It still angers me, 2 days later that Rakos didn't shoot on the empty net or just hold the puck a little longer, but nothing a little therapy can't cure.

Best of Luck in the US Division, Everett. May the power of Mueller and his Mullet carry you to much success.
