Bronco Week In Review: The Broncos had their busiest week all season at home this past week, hosting the Everett Silvertips on Wednesday night, then the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday and the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night. The only other time this season that the Broncos play 3 home games in 4 nights is on March 8th, 10th, and 11th when they host the Regina Pats, the Moose Jaw Warriors, and the Prince Albert Raiders respectively.

Wednesday night the Broncos hosted the U.S. Division Leading Everett Silvertips for the only match-up between the two teams this season. The game marked the 1st time recently traded Broncos Boris Leckovic and Jason Fransoo played against their former team. The game got off to a slow start with a scoreless 1st period that saw each team skate off the ice with just 3 shots a piece. It wasn't until the 13:24 mark of the 2nd period that the game saw its 1st goal. After Zach Sim took a 2 minute minor for checking from behind, Kyle Bortis managed to squeeze his 2nd goal in his last 3 games past Silvertips net-minder Leland Irving. The Broncos would hold onto their 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd period. The Broncos were 5-0-0-1 when leading after 40 minutes of play heading into the game on Wednesday. Kevin Constantine, coach of the Silvertips, pulled Leland Irving with 2 minutes and 50 seconds left in the game. The Broncos would have numerous attempts at the empty net, however, were not successful. Jason Fransoo, with just 1.3 seconds remaining, managed to bounce one off of a Bronco defenseman past Kyle Moir, stopping the shutout and tying the game. With overtime settling the nothing, the game went to a shootout, the Broncos 4th shootout of the season. Peter Mueller was the first shot for the Silvertips and, after some fancy stickhandling, slipped a shot past Kyle Moir. Levi Nelson followed Mueller for the Broncos but was unable to solve Leland Irving. John Lammers was then called upon for the Tips and he roofed a backhand over Kyle Moir to make the shoot-out score 2-0. Daniel Rakos was up next for the Broncos and had to score to keep the shoot-out alive. Rakos pulled the puck to his backhand but could not raise the puck over Irving's left pad, ending the game and giving the Silvertips a 2-1 shoot-out victory. The final shots on Wednesday night were 32-20 in favour of the Silvertips with an attendance of 1,962.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes were in town Friday for the 4th meeting between the 2 teams this season and the 1st at the Centennial Civic Centre. The Hurricanes were leading the season series 2-1 heading into the game. Not wasting any time getting started, Ben Wright took advantage of a Paul Postma roughing minor to score his 1st of the season at the 6:39 mark of the opening frame. The Hurricanes continued with the pressure and, again on the man-advantage, would receive another goal from Ken Petkau with 11:49 left to go in the 1st period. The bleeding would continue for the Broncos as Ned Lukacevic took a roughing minor, opening the door for Kyle Pess to give the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play on 3 power-play goals. After the intermission, the Hurricanes maintained their offensive pressure with Kyle Pess scoring his 2nd goal of the game with just 3:03 gone in the period, chasing Kyle Moir from the goal. Brant Hilton replaced Moir, however, Zach Boychuk would solve the newly acquired Broncos goaltender at the 5:26 mark of the 2nd period, giving the Hurricanes a 5-0 lead. Broncos 16-year-old rookie defenseman Paul Postma would bite into the Canes lead, scoring the 1st of his WHL career on the power-play, however, it would not be enough as Lethbridge skated away with a 5-1 win. Despite the outcome, the Broncos out-shot the Hurricanes 33-23 in front of 2,158 fans.

Saturday night was the first game of the season between the Moose Jaw Warriors and the Swift Current Broncos. The Warriors and their high-powered offence were in Swift Current for the 1st of 7 meetings between the 2 teams this season. The Warriors came out with a strong start and jumped to an early lead with Blair Jones (PP) scoring his 10th of the season past Kyle Moir at the 7:14 mark of the 1st period. The Broncos, however, would respond courtesy of Derek Price with 2:13 left in the frame. Price's goal was the 2nd consecutive game the Broncos had received a goal from a defenseman. The game would not remained tied for long as Troy Brouwer entered the Broncos zone and put one past Kyle Moir just 14 seconds after Price's goal. The Broncos would head into the dressing room down 2-1 after 20 minutes of play. In the 2nd period, Warriors forward Jacob Dietrich scored the 1st goal of his season at the 6:24 mark to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead heading into the 3rd period. The Warriors, coming into the game, were 10-0-1-0 when leading after the 2nd period. This would prove to be true on Saturday night as well when Kenndal McArdle would take over, scoring at the 8:32 and 11:54 (PP) marks of the 3rd period to put the Warriors up 5-1. Jeremy Schenderling would add his 13th goal of the season on the power-play late in the 3rd period to make the final score 5-2 in favour of Moose Jaw. Final shots on Saturday night were 44-31 in favour of Moose Jaw in front of a hometown crowd of 2,037 people.

Who's Hot? Broncos defenseman Derek Price has 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 2 games, marking the 1st time a Bronco defenseman has recorded a multiple game point streak this season. European born Thomas Raffl has recorded 3 points (0G; 3A) in his last 4 games. Jeremy Schenderling continued his lengthy hot streak, scoring 4 goals in his last 5 games.

Numbers: This season, the Broncos have struggled to score goals, however, they have improved in the department over last season. After 22 games this year, the Broncos have scored a total of 49 goals for an average of 2.2 goals per game. After 22 games in 2004/05, the Broncos had scored just 42 goals, giving them an average of 1.9 goals per game. The Broncos have scored 3 or more goals in 6 games this season, including a season high 7 on September 24th for the teams home opening game. Ned Lukacevic continues to lead the team in offence, posting 18 points (8G; 10A) in 21 games. Ned's numbers closely reflect those of the Broncos leading scorer after 22 games in 2004/05. Tyler Redenbach lead the club with 18 points (7G; 11A) as well. Jeremy Schenderling is leading the team in goals with 13, including 7 on the power-play. Rookie Levi Nelson is 3rd on the team in goals with 6, and is leading all Bronco rookies in scoring with 8 points (6G; 2A). Josh Aspendlind has been in the sin bin more than any other Bronco this season, collecting 65 penalty minutes in his first 19 games. Karl Benke is 2nd on the team with 40 in his first 14 games. Kyle Bortis is the only Bronco skater who is yet to take a penalty this season.

Special Teams: The Broncos power-play has been consistent as of late, scoring 1 power-play goal in its last 5 games. This week, the teams power-play went 3 for 19, giving them a season total of 21 power-play goals. The Broncos have scored 42.8% of their goals on the power-play this season. The power-play unit has gone 21 for 126 after 22 games, good for a 16.7% success rate and 13th in the WHL. The Broncos penalty kill struggled this week, allowing 6 power-play goals against on 19 attempts. The poor effort brought the teams penalty killing success rate down to 83.3% (22 goal against in 132 power-plays against), dropping them from 7th in the WHL to 11th. The special teams, however, have improved greatly over the 2004/05 season. After 22 games last year, the Broncos power-play was operating at just 7.9% and their penalty kill was operating at an 80.0% success rate.
