Tips can't find net, lose 2-0

EVERETT - After 19 hard days on the road, the Everett Silvertips were looking forward to finally coming back home.

But despite returning to the friendly confines of the Everett Events Center, the Silvertips still resembled the team that had so much trouble scoring goals on the road.

Everett's offensive struggles continued Friday night as the Silvertips were shut out 2-0 by the Kamloops Blazers.

"No, that wasn't the way we wanted to come back home, that's for sure," Everett goaltender Leland Irving said.

Terrance Delaronde scored what proved to be the game-winning goal mere seconds after Everett's best scoring chance of the game. Then after essentially having the first period off, Kamloops goaltender Devan Dubnyk turned away all 21 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season.

Meanwhile, Everett continued to have difficulty finding the net.

The Tips, who scored just seven goals in the final six games of their recently completed road trip, were an offensive non-factor in the first period, getting outshot 12-1. Everett picked it up in the following two periods, but found no way past Dubnyk. The Tips also finished 0-for-6 on the power play, including a lengthy stretch of five-on-three.

"It's not uncharacteristic for a team to come home and be flat in the first game back," Everett coach Kevin Constantine said. "Partly it's the time off (six days since Everett's last game), you get mentally a little rusty. So that definitely happened. We tried to tell our guys about that, and it took the first period getting outshot the way we did for our guys to realize we actually knew what we were talking about."

Brock Nixon added an empty-net goal in the final minutes for Kamloops (14-12), which rebounded from difficult losses to Tri-City and Vancouver in its previous two games.

"We came out with a pretty embarrassing effort (in a 2-1 loss at Tri-City on Thursday)," Dubnyk said. "It wasn't the kind of hockey we like to play. So it was pretty good, not only to come out with a win, but a pretty good effort from everyone in the room."

Irving had a fantastic game in net for Everett (14-8-1-0). He finished with 32 saves, virtually all of which were difficult. If not for his performance, the sellout crowd of 8,349 would have witnessed a blowout.

"They were pretty good chances," Irving said. "Most games I'm used to perimeter shots and stuff that's fairly easy to handle. But they had quite a few quality scoring chances. I felt good out there and was able to make some saves and give us a chance to win. Unfortunately we were unable to come through."

The game's decisive moment came early in the second period. Everett's Peter Mueller was sent free on a breakaway. Dubnyk barely got a piece of Mueller's shot, but it was enough to push the puck onto the post.

Kamloops immediately broke the other way and Delaronde found room to skate in on goal on the left. He put an unstoppable shot into the far-upper corner at 4 minutes, 39 seconds to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

"It's very typical in hockey, you get a breakaway at one end and a goal at the other," Constantine said. "There's been hundreds of times I've seen that in hockey. It's such a momentum-changing moment in a game."

Everett had other chances to score late, the best falling to John Lammers and Brady Calla, but it was Kamloops that found the net again, Nixon scoring into the empty net after a turnover in the neutral zone with 1:45 remaining.

Slap shots: Two players made their WHL debuts for Everett on Friday, center Jonathan Milhouse and defenseman Mike Alexander. Alexander got the call when Jonathan Harty was unable to play because of a knock taken in practice Thursday. He joined Shaun Heshka and Eric Doyle as Tips defensemen on the sidelines. With Milhouse and Alexander in the lineup Everett dressed five 1989-born players. ... With top forwards Reid Jorgensen (broken jaw) and Matt Kassian (suspension) unavailable, Kamloops fielded Ray Macias at forward. Macias, who played extensively at both forward and defense last season, had been used almost exclusively as a defenseman this season.

Tips looked awful last night, except Irving. I would say last night was Irving's best home game of the year. Everyone else looked really sloppy. Hope it looks better against Spokane tonight, but I have a feeling that the Hamill situation is realoly going to hurt us for the next 5 or 6 weeks.

GO Tips!
