WHL SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

Tuesday, November 29, 2005

Calgary, AB – Ron Robison, Commissioner of the WHL announced today that the WHL has reached a new partnership agreement with the Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA) for the purpose of further enhancing scholarship opportunities for WHL players attending Universities in Western Canada.

Under the new agreement, the WHL and CWUAA will combine forces to further raise awareness of the WHL Scholarship program and to encourage players graduating from the WHL to remain in the Canadian Hockey system by continuing their hockey career at a Western Canadian University.

Upon completion of their eligibility in major junior hockey, WHL players are entitled to receive a full scholarship to the post secondary institution of their choice. The fully indexed WHL scholarship consists of tuition fees, textbooks and compulsory fees for each season played in the WHL. In addition to the fully guaranteed WHL Scholarship, each Canada West University program offers further financial assistance from a variety of third party contributors resulting in an overall scholarship offer which is considered to be one of the most attractive in North America today.

The WHL-CWUAA partnership was developed by a joint committee consisting of representatives from the WHL Board of Governors and Staff as well as Canada West University Athletic Directors, Staff and Hockey Coaches. The members of the joint WHL-CWUAA committee includes Ron Robison, Commissioner of the WHL; Jack Brodsky, Governor of the Saskatoon Blades and Chairman of the WHL Scholarship Committee; and Jim Donlevy, WHL Director of Education Services along with members of the CWUAA, including Val Schneider, Executive Director, CWUAA; Bob Phillip, Athletic Director, UBC; Dale Schulha, Athletic Director, University of Alberta; Scott Atkinson, Head Coach, University of Calgary Hockey Team; Dave Adolph, Head Coach, University of Saskatchewan Hockey Team; Bob Stauffer, Sports Information Director, University of Alberta; and Jack Neumann, Sports Information Director, University of Calgary.

The WHL is also pleased to announce today that a total of 243 players are attending post-secondary institutions on WHL Scholarships this season. Of the 243 players on WHL Scholarships, 165 players are WHL graduates, while 78 players are currently playing in the WHL. This academic year, 186 graduate and current players are attending Canadian Universities (CIS), including 126 at Canada West Universities (CWUAA), while 42 are registered at Canadian Colleges, 11 at U.S. Colleges and four attending other post-secondary institutions.

This season the full academic scholarships awarded by WHL Clubs to graduate players, combined with the education assistance provided to current players, represents a total financial contribution of close to $1 million. The WHL Scholarship program is currently solely funded by the member Clubs of the WHL.

At today’s announcement, the WHL presented the Canada West Universities a cheque in the amount of $571,618 representing the share of the overall WHL Scholarship support which has been directed to Universities in Western Canada.

“The number of WHL Scholarships awarded each year illustrates the ongoing commitment the WHL has to provide the best possible post-secondary education opportunities for players participating in our League,” stated WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “We are very proud that many of our graduates, through the WHL Scholarship program, will be in a position to complete their university or college education right here in Canada.”

Since 1993, the WHL has awarded more than 2,240 scholarships representing an investment of close to $7 million by WHL Clubs.

The WHL gratefully acknowledges the support of Husky Energy as a league-wide sponsor of the WHL Education Program.
