Hromas ready, but Tips must wait
Left wing has healed from concussion, but he's headed to tryouts for World Junior Hockey Championships, not Everett's lineup

EVERETT - The good news for the Everett Silvertips is that Karel Hromas appears to be back at full strength.

The bad news is that does Everett no good for the upcoming weekend.

Hromas, tied for fifth on the team in scoring with 17 points, has made enough progress from his concussion that he's returned to practice. But his recovery coincides with his departure for the World Junior Hockey Championships tryouts.

Hromas, a 19-year-old left wing, was one of six Western Hockey League players invited to the Czech Republic's tryout camp in Kamloops, British Columbia - the others are forwards Petr Kalus (Regina); Zdenek Bahensky (Saskatoon); Michal Psurny and Roman Psurny (both Medicine Hat); and defenseman Thomas Kudelka (Lethbridge). Hromas is scheduled to leave today.

Hromas sat out Everett's past two games after suffering a blow to the head Dec. 6 against Prince George. He will miss Friday's game at Spokane, Saturday's home game against Seattle and Sunday's game at Seattle because of the tryouts. Should he make the team he will miss an additional two games following the Christmas break.

Everett's other loss due to the World Juniors, leading scorer Peter Mueller, doesn't join Team USA until Sunday and is expected to miss just one game this weekend.

Elsewhere among Everett's injuries, right wing Torrie Wheat, who suffered a concussion in the same game as Hromas and also sat out the past two games, was not listed on Everett's injury report. Forwards Zack Dailey (shoulder) and Jonathan Milhouse (concussion) and defenseman Jonathan Harty (groin) all were listed as day-to-day. Center Zach Hamill (mononucleosis) won't return until after the Christmas break.

Around the WHL: Everett advanced one spot to eighth in this week's Western Major Junior Hockey Writers Association poll. Calgary took over the top spot, earning all 18 first-place votes. Kelowna moved up two spots to second, Vancouver jumped from sixth to third. Last week's No. 1 Kootenay fell to fourth. ... Saskatoon forward Joe Barnes is the WHL Player of the Week for Dec. 5-11. Barnes had three goals and an assist in two games, both Blades wins. ... Kamloops fired head coach Mark Ferner. Ferner, who took over during last season, posted a 35-41-2 record, including a 16-16 mark this season. General manager Dean Clark, who coached the Blazers before moving to the front office, takes over as coach.
