Brandon, Manitoba – After vaulting past Derek LeBlanc and into the club scoring lead, 18-year old center Codey Burki has been chosen December’s winner of the Brandon Wheat Kings’ Tip Top Tailors Player of the Month.

Burki joins Mark Derlago (November) and Cole Hunter (September/October) as this year’s recipients.

A former first round draft choice of the Wheat Kings (17th overall) in the 2002 Western Hockey League Bantam draft, Burki shared the club scoring lead last month, finishing December with three goals and 9 points in nine games. In addition to finishing the month on a 4-game point scoring streak, the former Winnipeg bantam Monarch registered a +5. The highlight of the month came last week when he scored once and set up two others in a 6-2 Wheat Kings’ victory over the visiting Regina Pats at the Keystone Centre.

Burki, who is eligible for the 2006 National Hockey League entry draft, currently leads the club in scoring with 25 points including eleven goals in 37 games. His goals, assists and points totals all represent career highs for the Winnipeg born Burki, who edged out Derlago and goalkeeper Tyler Plante for December honours. He also played a key role in Brandon posting a winning record for the month (5-4-0), for the first time this season.

Burki, who had nine goals and 21 points in 67 games last season, was recently ranked fifth by Central Scouting of all WHL players eligible for June’s entry draft. Off the ice, Codey is a valuable member of the hockey club’s CIBC Read to Succeed Program.

In recognition of the honour, Codey will receive a shirt, tie and suit from Tip Top Tailors in the Shoppers Mall, the official menswear clothier of the Wheat Kings during next Wednesday night’s game against the visiting Red Deer Rebels

Brandon’s next home game is this Friday against Lethbridge and tickets to both games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or by going on line at ticketmaster.ca.

This Friday's game will feature the annual Wheat Kings' Family Skate, presented by The Farm and Home Depot.
