The Selkirk Steelers have added 19-year-old superstar Kyle Howarth from the WHL's Prince Albert Raiders. Howarth was traded today by the Raiders to the Everett Silvertips, but has opted to return to the team he led in scoring as a 17 year-old instead. "He's the reason I held on to our last card. We couldn't have traded for a player this good. I think he'll go to our top line right away and perhaps suit up with (Travis) Kornelson and (Adam) Sergerie," said Steeler General Manager Ken Petrash

Tips trade for 'other' Prince Albert forward
Everett trades for Kyle Howarth - not Kyle Chipchura, who was rumored to be moving.

EVERETT - The Everett Silvertips landed a forward from Prince Albert at the Western Hockey League trade deadline.

However, it wasn't the forward much of the WHL's trade speculation surrounded.

Everett made a minor addition at Tuesday's trade deadline, acquiring 19-year-old left wing Kyle Howarth from the Raiders for 16-year-old prospect Jesse Burt and a fifth-round pick in the 2007 Bantam Draft.

Everett made one other minor move, sending 17-year-old left wing Brennan Zasitko to Saskatoon for a seventh-round pick in the 2007 Bantam Draft.

Much of the speculation leading into the trade deadline centered around Prince Albert's star center Kyle Chipchura, with some rumors having Everett as one of the bidders.

However, Everett refrained from making any major deals - either for a top-end forward or for an experienced defenseman - and avoided sacrificing a piece of the future in the process.

"We would have been happy to make a trade today that we felt would really bolster our team for the rest of this year," Everett coach and director of hockey operations Kevin Constantine said. "Unfortunately, anything that would have done that would have put a dent in what we're trying to do for the future. It would have been too big a price to pay to borrow a guy for three months, because every time we mentioned someone who would have been an impact for us, it was always a guy (Peter Mueller, Zach Hamill, Brady Calla) they wanted that was a huge part of our future."

Instead Everett made a depth move in acquiring Howarth, a 6-foot-1, 196-pound native of Belair, Manitoba.

Howarth is joining his third team this season. He began the season with Spokane before being traded to Prince Albert in November in a three-way deal that also involved Seattle. He had one goal, eight assists and 36 penalty minutes in 38 games between the Chiefs and Raiders.

Last season Howarth, whose twin brother Brent plays for Kelowna, had 15 goals, 10 assists and 82 penalty minutes in 61 games with Spokane.

"Kyle Howarth is experienced, he's a pretty big kid, he's scored in the past," Constantine said. "So we think that with adding him and (Brennan) Sonne to our lineup the last two weeks we definitely are deeper at forward than we've ever been in the organization, and we should be able to handle an injury or two better than we have in the past."

Burt, a center who was a member of Everett's 50-player protected list but had yet to play for the Tips, was Everett's 10th-round selection in the 2004 Bantam Draft.

Zasitko was recently returned to Selkirk of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He was called up in December to provide cover for injuries and players headed to international tournaments. This season he had one assist in six games with Everett.

Last season the injury-plagued Zasitko played in 28 games for the Tips, registering three assists.

"Because of our depth and bringing in Sonne and Howarth, it was clear to us that Zasitko wouldn't get a chance to play for us this year," Constantine said. "He's a great kid and we thought we'd put his name out there to try to help him. We hope Brennan gets an opportunity in Saskatoon that maybe he wasn't going to get with us."

Howarth's acquisition gives Everett 26 players - 16 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders. The Tips need to trim the roster down to 25 per league rules. Constantine said he planned on making that move shortly.

A total of 26 players and 13 draft picks were exchanged in 13 different deals conducted Tuesday.

By far the most active team was Saskatoon, which acquired the biggest name moved in high-scoring center Chad Klassen and also revamped its defense. The Blades were a part of the day's blockbuster, picking up the 20-year-old Klassen along with 19-year-old goaltender Jim Watt and 19-year-old defensemen Joe Logan and David Schulz from Spokane in exchange for talented 17-year-old goaltender Kevin Armstrong, 19-year-old defenseman Evan Haw and a pair of draft picks. Saskatoon also received 20-year-old defenseman Derek Price and 18-year-old defenseman Michael Hengen from Swift Current for 20-year-old forward Brandon Tidball, 18-year-old defenseman Dane Crowley and a draft pick.

In other notable trades: Kootenay and Medicine Hat swapped 19-year-old Czech forwards, with the Ice acquiring Michal Psurny and the Tigers picking up Marek Curilla; Calgary upgraded its offense by acquiring 19-year-old forward Derek Leblanc from Brandon for 18-year-old defenseman Dustin Kohn; and Moose Jaw made a move to shore up its back end by picking up 19-year-old goaltender Andrew Leslie and 20-year-old defenseman Matthew Hansen from Red Deer for 19-year-old defenseman Jordan Henry and 20-year-old goaltender Josh Lepp.

However, the biggest names rumored to be on the move - Chipchura, Kamloops goaltender Devan Dubnyk and Vancouver center Gilbert Brule - all stayed put.
