Well another domination of the Hawks by the Giants tonight in Portland. 1st was pretty even, but the Giants owned the Hawks in the 2nd and never looked back. Game got ugly near the end of the 2nd, with a line brawl, and more fights in the 3rd period. An ugly cross-check to the face of Tim Kraus in the last minute of the game, by Bubnick, which resulted in a 5 min major and even more fights. Portland tried to hurt the Giants in the third, with an Elbow to the face of Repik that drew blood, a running of Slade and the Cross check to Kraus.

NOTES
Slade and Shier got the starts tonight.
Tartaglione, Scharff (Shoulder), Rutherford (Flu), were the Giants scratches.
Kraus left at the end of the third - Don Hay reported he is missing teeth after the cross check to the face.
Shots 45-16 Giants
PP Giants 1/5, Hawks 0/4

GOALS
1. POR Bubnick, (21) (Hansen, Sauer), 8:34 Against the flow of the play, Bubnick comes in on the wing alone after getting the pass from Hansen, and goes right around Slade and puts it into the net.
1. VAN Watt, (7) (Lamb, Bliznak), 11:34 Hawks can't clear the zone, Watt gets a loose puck fires a shot, gets a rebound and puts it in.
2. VAN Lamb, (18) (Reese, Festerling), 2:22 Reese hits the post right at the end of a PP, and Lamb gets the puck and tucks it home on the open side.
2. VAN Kraus, (20) (Bartley, Blum), 3:46 Nice wrist shot from Kraus high glove side that beats Shier high glove side.
2. VAN Repik, (19) (Hunt, Kraus), 10:21 Bad goal by Shier here, as repik from behind the net just wraps it around and tucks it through Shier.
3. VAN Reese, (5) (Mikkelson, Watt), 6:36 (PP) On the PP, Mikkelson lets a wrister go from the point, rebound out to Reese and he puts it in.
3. POR Woolger, (17) , 10:08 A rare defensive zone breakdown, Woogler blockas a clearing attempt, and he lets a slapshot go from the top of the circle that beats Slade.

FISTICUFFS

Lots of Fights Im going to do my best.....

Lucic vs. Collins
A brief fight here as they are talking after a hit and decide to go. Collins gets an early shot in, Lucic gets 3-4 hard rights that land, throws another and Collins losses an edge with Lucic ending up on top. 5 Each. EDGE: LUCIC

Mikkelson vs Hansen
After the Giants 4th goal, Hansen picks a fight with Mikkelson, Hansen throws a hard punch that knocks Mikkelson off balance, with Hansen ending up on top. Hansen gets the Instigator. EDGE: HANSEN

Line Brawl
Starts with Fistric roughing up Friesen.

Fistric vs. Friesen
Along the boards they are mixing it up, Fistric drops the gloves, gets a few shots in but the camera pans off them during the brawl, but according to the radio guys, Fistric let up on Friesen, once he saw who he had. No idea on a winner but I will assume Fistric. Fistric gets the Instigator.

Hunt vs. Collins
With Fistric mixing it up with Friesen, Collins looks to get in there and he ends up grabbing Hunt. Fight was all Collins, as he was throwing numerous punches to the top of Hunts head. Hunt got a few shots in late, and he never went down, full props to Hunt for taking on the much bigger Collins and standing toe to toe with him. Both got game misconducts. Couldnt even see Hunt when Collins had his back to the camera. WIN: COLLINS

Gazdik vs. Lamb
Didn't see much of it just a few shots thrown by Lamb, looked like Lamb threw the most punches and had the edge but hard to tell as the camera was mostly on Hunt/Collins. Im going to give the win to Lamb, but not 100% sure on that. Both got Game Miscoducts.

Now onto Period 3.....

Bliznak vs Blazan
They have words after a whistle, line up for the ensuing faceoff and then both drop the gloves. More wrestling than anything, they both fall quickly to the ice, not much. Both get 5's. DRAW

Hansen vs. Machacek
Hansen has not had enough so he picks a fight with Machacek. Machacek decides to go, but its all Hansen as he catches Machacek with a few overhand rights, and gets the knock down as well. 2/5/10 for Hansen. WIN: HANSEN.

Franson vs. Bubnick
After Bubnick flattens Kraus with a cross check to the face, Franson comes in to stand up for his teammate. Franson gets a number of good shots, and I think he did get the majority of the hits in, but Im having a hard time remembering this one. Franson gets 2/5/10, Bubnick 5/5/10, WIN FRANSON.

Lucic vs. Funk
Not over yet. Lucic are Funk having words and the ref tries to stop them from going during the Franson Fight, but they end up going anyway. Fight is mostly Lucic, with him landing a few good shots with a real solid one landing near the end. Linesman break it up, both get 5 and a game. WIN LUCIC.

and that is that, I tired to recap all these fights, but ran out of paper/ memory storage. Im going to watch the archive again tomorrow and make any changes that may be needed to be made then LOL.

OFFICIATING
Jason Nissen was the ref tonight, and I dont think he did a good job. He refused to call any minors today, and I think thats what helped towards this boiling point getting reached. The Elbow on Repik should have been at least 4, not 2, Slade got ran no call, and the Crosscheck to Kraus should have been an attempt to injure, at least a gross Misconduct. Not a very good job as he seemed to reluctant to call any penalties.

DUMB PENALTY OF THE NIGHT
Why bother in this game 188 Penalty minutes and only 9 PP's. most of those PP's came off Instigators.

OVERALL
4 games, 4 dominations by the Giants and the frustration point for the Hawks was finally met. Pretty ugly game, at the end, but the Giants stood up for one another, and got the win on another hard working night. Hopefully this game isnt to costly in suspensions/ injuries. Good thing these 2 teams don't meet againt untill March. Kudos to Slade for NOT getting involved.

3 Stars
1. VAN - 9 Jason Reese
2. VAN - 12 Tim Kraus
3. VAN - 19 Mitch Bartley

Forgot to metion the Internet feed. Game was at the Memorial, pretty good coverage overall, and the Announcers knew a lot about all the players and the league. They were very good to listen too, I like the Portland announcers.

I agree. Good announcers. Especially for an American team. Better than a lot of Fox broadcasters. And better than some of the WHL Live games I've watched from the praries....

It was a great game, if you like watching a mess load of fights and a dominating performance by the Giants. First was pretty even actually, have to give the Hawks credit for that.

The hits to the head I can live without though.

Here's a fight re cap from a poster on "hockeyfights.com"

I wasn't at the game since it was in Portland, however I did watch it.

Milan Lucic vs Garth Collins:

Lucic hits Collins against the side boards and the two decide to drop the gloves. Both guys grab a hold of each other and Collins starts off quickly throwing lefts. Lucic's helmet gets knocked off and they tie up for a couple of seconds. Lucic gets his right arm free and hits Collins with 5 or 6 punches. Collins tries to respond with a left that misses and Lucic throws a right as Collins falls to the ice. Lucic threw another punch or two while Collins was down. Win Lucic.

Brendan Mikkelson vs Jannik Hansen:

This fight started behind the play after a hit by Mikkelson near center ice. Hansen removes Mikkelson's helmet right away and the two start to grapple. Mikkelson tries throwing a couple of short rights that don't connect, followed by a right by Mikkelson which also misses. The two start spinning around and Hansen throws a right which hits the back of Mikkelson's head and drops him to the ice with Hansen on top. I wouldn't call it a TKO, but definitely a knock down win for Hansen.

Not technically a fight here, but Mitch Bartley threw a hit on a Portland player and ended up falling down and sliding on the ice against the boards. Kyle Bailey jumped on top of him and just started wailing on the back of his head. No fighting majors were given out but at this point you could tell more was going to happen...

Mark Fistric vs Kelly Friesen:

I believe Friesen hit Garet Hunt and Fistric jumped in to his defense. Not much really happened in this fight other than Fistric throwing some noogie right hand punches to the back of Friesen's head and also ragdolling Friesen against the boards and eventually down to the ice. Win Fistric.

Garet Hunt vs Garth Collins:

While the Fistric and Friesen fight is going, a big scrum starts and Garth Collins picks out the smallest guy on the ice, Garet Hunt. Collins just hammered Hunt. It was hard to see everything but Collins threw at least 10 left hand punches on Hunt and then switched up to his right and threw another 5 or 10. He was just throwing jack hammer after jack hammer on Hunt who just stood there and took them. Hunt tried throwing a few lefts after Collins tired himself out but nothing of any significance. Easy win for Collins. Hunt looked a bit woozy going off the ice afterwards. I give him props though for hanging in there and not going down. He must've been hit by Collins at least 25 times.

Kyle Lamb vs Libor Gizdik:

These two were in the middle of the scrum and Lamb had his right arm free throwing uppercuts on Gizdik. Lamb continued to throw right after right and Gizdik was finally able to get off the ice and onto his skates. At this point his jersey is off (just hanging on his arms) and Lamb continued to throw a couple of rights until Lamb finally wrestles him down against the boards and falls on top. Win Lamb.

During all of this Dustin Slade came out of the net and tried to jump into the Hunt and Collins fight to help out Hunt but nothing came of it. He also skated out near the blue line and was looking down towards Shier. He was also shooting the puck down towards the Portland goal. It appeared as though he was trying to challenge Shier but nothing came of it unfortunately.

Mario Bliznak vs Stanislav Balan:

These two were pushing and shoving after a whistle. Off the next face off the two drop the gloves and basically grab a hold of each other, wrestle around and fall to the ice. Bliznak looked as though he was throwing some short weak rights while he was on his back with Balan on top but either way no damage done. Draw.

Spencer Machachek vs Jannik Hansen:

These two hook up near center ice. Machachek starts off throwing lefts while Hansen is doing his best to duck out of the way. Hansen comes back with a couple of rights while Machachek comes back with another left. Machachek almost loses his balance but stays up and throws another left countered by a right by Hansen. At this point Machachek's helmet came off. The two continue throwing punches Hasen with rights and Machachek with lefts. Machachek then takes a right from Hansen and falls down. Win Hansen.

The game was still getting heated at this point even though it was almost over and Lenny Thunderchild was working over Jason Reese in front of the Portland net and J.D. Watt stepped in and gave him a shot. The two started to exchange gloved punches and Watt nailed him with a solid right which knocked his helmet off. Thunderchild then dropped the gloves but unfortunately the linesmen were right there and the two ended up getting penalties and were kicked out of the game.

With only about 8 seconds left in the game, Jonathan Bubnick cross checks Tim Kraus in the face and Kraus goes down and is hurt.

Jonathan Bubnick vs Cody Franson:

Franson jumps in and goes after Bubnick. Franson was throwing right after right on Bubnick who was just trying to avoid fighting and Bubnick falls down to the ice with Franson still throwing rights as he lands on top. Win Franson.

Milan Lucic vs Michael Funk:

These two tie up during the Franson and Bubnick fight. The ref was right between the two trying to pry them apart. At first it didn't appear as though they were going to fight but after a couple of gloved punches and some chatting between the two they decide to scrap. Lucic gets Funk's helmet off and throws a couple of rights, the first one appeared to land with the other two coming up short. Funk responds with two rights that hit Lucic's helmet. The two grapple for a couple of seconds and Funk throws another right which is countered by a right from Lucic. Lucic was able to lock out Funk and he throws a couple more rights which connect. Funk tries a couple of short left and right hand jabs which don't do any damage and Lucic lands another right. Lucic comes back with an uppercut which just misses, followed by a right by Funk and another right by Lucic. Both punches didn't appear to land. Funk throws a right which comes up short followed by two rights by Lucic which also don't connect. At this point the two are tired and start to grab onto one another and the linesmen step in the seperate the two. The fight was pretty even and I wouldn't argue with somebody calling the fight a draw, however Lucic did land the better punches during the fight. So I would give the edge to Lucic.
