Silvertips Decimate Americans
Everett Wins 8-1
Everett Silvertips Press Release

Everett, WA - The Everett Silvertips ran away with an 8-1 win over division rivals, the Tri-City Americans. This is the sixth meeting of ten between these two clubs and the Silvertips lead the series 4-1-1. Everett has a firm foothold in first place with 50 points and a 24-15-2-0 record. Tri-Cities, at the bottom of the US Division, has 37 points and a 16-17-3-2 record.

All the scoring came in the first two periods. Torrie Wheat started it off with a shot at the doorstep at 11:44 on an Everett power play. Zach Hamill followed his lead with another power play tally 49 seconds later. Alex Aldred, on an American power play and attempting to close the gap for his team, sent the puck top shelf to make it 2-1. Ian McDonald received the lone assist. The Silvertips bounced back and put another notch on the scoreboard with a Mark Kress goal at 15:29. Everett ended the first period up 3-1.

The Silvertips didn't wait long to get back on the wagon. At 2:12 of the second Zach Hamill earned his second goal of the night with a shot through traffic, on a power play. John Lammers at 7:56, again on a Silvertip power play, fired the puck from center point which found the net to make it 5-1. Three minutes later Zack Dailey earned his first of two goals followed by Damir Alic, who earned his first career Western Hockey League goal. Then at 19:36 Zack Dailey scored again to finalize the game at 8-1. In 24 minutes the Everett Silvertips went on a 6-0 run. There was no scoring in the third period.

Leland Irving started the game and played the first two periods. He stopped 11 of 12 shots and bumps his record up to 22-13-1-0. Matt Esposito came in to play the final session and stopped all 12 shots he faced. Chet Pickard was the starting goaltender for the Tri-City Americans. He stopped 17 of 24 shots before he was pulled late in the second. He earns the loss and drops his record to 3-4-0-0. Carey Price was Pickard's relief and stopped 5 of 6 shots in the 23 minutes he played. On the power play Everett went 4 for 9 while Tri-Cities converted on 1 of 4 chances. The Silvertips out shot the Americans 30-24.

Other honorable mentions this game were Wheat's 100th point earned as an Everett Silvertip and a new record was set for most goals scored in a game by Everett.

Everett is back at home on Friday, January 13th, where they will face off against second place Portland Winterhawks. The puck drops at 7:05pm.

From the sounds of it Pat Smith should have gotten the first star. That was pretty brutal. Worst officiating of the year. I hope the league reviews this game just like they did when Constantine sent the tape of the last one in.

Smith was brutal, but TCA did not come to play. It seemed like from the very beginning the "strategy" was, forget about playing defense, let's take the Tips out of the game by getting physical with them. Other teams have tried this, and it always is good for the Tips when that happens. The fact is the officials, with the exception of maybe Savage, call the rough stuff nowadays. Smith missed/didn't make a lot of calls too (yes, it could have been worse). The fact o the matter is, in a 3-1, 4-2 game you can blame it on the officials. in an 8-1 game in which you give up 5 goals in the 2nd period alone, the only place you can look is in the mirror.

Silvertips rout Americans 8-1

By Nick Patterson
Herald Writer

EVERETT - One could be forgiven if one thought they'd arrived at an emergency scene Wednesday night at the Everett Events Center, what with the constant flashing lights and frequency of horns going off.

Such is the scene when a hockey team finds the net the way the Everett Silvertips did Wednesday.

Everett put on the type of offensive show never before seen at the Events Center, lighting the lamp eight times as the Silvertips routed the Tri-City Americans 8-1 in the best offensive performance in franchise history.

"It's definitely a lot of fun to score some goals," said Everett defenseman Shaun Heshka, who tallied five assists. "It's good for our goal scorers to get their stats up a little bit, and it's good for our goaltender to have a night where he doesn't have to worry about a tight game. It's just nice once in a while to not have those tight games that we're so used to."

Wednesday's game, before a crowd of 4,159, was the setting for a number of Everett milestones. The eight goals were the most Everett ever scored in game. Torrie Wheat, with a goal and four assists, became the first player to ever score 100 points in his Silvertips career - he now has 104. Heshka - along with Wheat - tied the franchise record with five assists in one game.

Damir Alic scored his first WHL goal, becoming the first Washington resident to ever score for the Silvertips. And Brennan Sonne announced himself with fighting antics worthy of former Everett hero Mitch Love.

"It was cool," Wheat said. "We came out real hard. We've tended in games against these guys to come out a little soft, and they're a tough team. It was nice to see us come out hard tonight. We got quite a few good bounces, but it pays off."

Zach Hamill and Zach Dailey each scored two goals, and John Lammers and Mark Kress also scored for Everett (24-15-2-0), which scored all eight of its goals in the first two periods. The Tips were an impressive 4-for-9 on the power play.

Leland Irving earned the win in goal for Everett, saving 11 of the 12 shots he saw in the first two periods before giving way to Matt Esposito. Esposito stopped all 12 shots he faced in the third period.

"When you lose 8-1 you didn't play very well," Tri-City coach Don Nachbaur said. "They played good and deserve credit, they came at us hard. They draw more penalties than any team in the league and I thought we got baited on a few calls. But that's life in Everett."

Slap shots: Everett defenseman Taylor Ellington returned to the lineup Wednesday. He missed the previous two games because of illness. ... Tri-City played without enforcer Aaron Boogaard. Boogaard was suspended two games for a knee-on-knee hit to Everett's Ryan Sawka in Saturday's meeting in Kennewick, won 2-1 in overtime by the Americans. Tri-City also played without its second-leading goal scorer, Matt Schneider, because of injury. ... Everett center Peter Mueller, who has been home in Bloomington, Minn., resting after the World Junior Hockey Championships, is expected back today and should be in the lineup Friday against Portland.

Great Quote from Don Nachbaur:

"When you lose 8-1 you didn't play very well," Tri-City coach Don Nachbaur said. "They played good and deserve credit, they came at us hard. They draw more penalties than any team in the league and I thought we got baited on a few calls. But that's life in Everett."

I wish I was there to see this game. All radio descriptions were nit-picking penalties to put the Ams down and non-calls against the Tips. I have no doubt that we can come out flat (happened at home against MJ), but penalties 6-2 after 2 periods in favor of Everett seems akward. Sometimes I think Nachbaur has a bad reputation with the officials.

... after the disasterous reffing the other night against Kamloops, by Thiessen.

This game against Tri-City could have had more penalties, certainly, and some of the penalties called were kind of rinky-dink.

Then again, half of the eight goals weren't even PP goals for the Silvertips, so not everything can be blamed on poor officiating.

Picard did decent in goal during the First Period, making some huge saves, but he could not sustain that throughout the Second Period. His biggest problem was the lack of defensive effort by the Americans when the Silvertips were in offense-mode.

And what's up with Sonne, waving to the crowd during his first fight? I have liked Sonne's effort in his first few games as a Silvertip, but he seemed to take it a little far in this particular game. Then again, this whole game went a little over the line in multiple ways... It makes me wonder if the trade talks affect the players in the sense that some of them might think, "Hey, they wanted an enforcer... I'll show them an enforcer..."

Price has been suspended for 1 Game after hitting an Everett player with his blocker.
