Ed Jovanovski cannot help Canada defend its gold medal at the upcoming Torino Olympic Winter Games.

Jovanovski, 29, learned Monday that he requires lower abdominal surgery to repair an injured groin.

The three-time NHL all-star posted three assists in six games as Team Canada ended its 50-year gold-medal drought at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics.

"After further consultation with one of the leading physicians, with regard to abdominal sports injuries, it was decided that surgery was the best course of action," Vancouver Canucks general manager Dave Nonis said in a statement.

"The best long-term decision for Eddie and our hockey club was to have the surgery immediately."

Jovanovski will undergo the procedure Wednesday in Philadelphia and be sidelined indefinitely.

"It is six weeks for sure, maybe longer, depending upon what they find," Nonis told TSN.

"The MRI's we have had have not shown any damage. But the doctor believes there is something there, and wants to go in and do the procedure."

Jovanovski will likely be replaced by Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Bryan McCabe, who is just recovered from a groin injury.

McCabe plans to return Tuesday at Tampa Bay.

Anaheim Mighty Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer also remains a question mark for Team Canada because of a nagging knee injury.

Jovanovki has posted six goals and 28 points in 39 games for the Canucks this season, his 10th since drafted first overall by the Florida Panthers in 1994.

The Windsor, Ont., native has totalled 84 goals and 312 points in 682 NHL games with the Panthers and Canucks.

In a way thats a ok thing cause maybe we can see Phaneuf getting the call. But nobody can replace the leadership and experience that came with Jovocop. We may be adding Niedermayer to that list as well.
