Scratches: Mueller, Wheat, Hromas, Sim, Doyle, etc.... (UGH - we're in for a long night)

Still no Mueller: The Silvertips aren't getting star center Peter Mueller back just yet. Mueller, who has 42 points in 36 games, has recovered fully from the concussion that forced him to miss Everett's past three games. However, Mueller has since come down with illness and is not making the trip to Kelowna.

Kress and Sawka Back: On the plus side, centers Mark Kress and Ryan Sawka could be back in the lineup tonight. Kress, who missed the past nine games with a shoulder injury and Sawka, who sat out the past 11 with a knee injury, both practiced at full speed Tuesday. Constantine said he was hopeful both would be available tonight.

Hromas recovering: Left wing Karel Hromas is out at least another two weeks with a cracked collarbone.

Scouting report: It's been a long time since the Tips last faced defending WHL champion Kelowna. The only previous meeting came back on Oct. 2, a game won 3-1 by Kelowna at the EEC.

Kelowna is once again one of the premier teams in the league. The Rockets (30-15-1-2) may be in third place in the B.C. Division, but they have a better winning percentage than the U.S. Division-leading Tips (29-17-2-1) and are coming off Saturday's 6-0 thrashing of Kootenay, which had been virtually unbeatable home.

Kelowna has a roster laden with experienced 19-year-olds. Left wing Justin Keller leads the league in goals with 38, Mike Card is third in the league in scoring among defensemen with 40 points, right wing Blake Comeau (15 goals, 34 assists) was a key member of Canada's gold medal-winning team at the World Junior Hockey Championships, and goaltender Derek Yeomans (20-10-0-1, 2.35 goals against average, .915 save percentage) has been solid.

Tonight's game also pits the top two power plays in the league. Everett is ranked first at .209 and Kelowna is right behind at .208.

The game wasn't as close as it looked, shots 30-16 in favor of the Rockets. Kelowna owned the first and third and if not for big penalty problems in the second it could of been a different game.

Very disapointed that Mueller wasn't in the game, hopefully next time.

The Tips had 10 power plays (three shortened) and managed just 16 shots. No Mueller, No Wheat, No Hromas (who all play on the #1 line), Ho Doyle, No Sim and Kress/Sawka coming back for their first game after lengthy layoffs meant guys like defenseman Peter Fransoo had to take faceoffs and play center. This was a good effort, bad game by the Tips. They never gave up and put forward a good effort, they just didn't have what it took to beat a touh Kelowna team with all those guys out.

Silvertips blanked as power play comes up short
Everett ends up 0-for-10 with the penalty advantage in a 2-0 defeat against Kelowna.

Herald staff

KELOWNA, B.C. - The top-ranked power play in the Western Hockey League proved a bust Wednesday night.

The Everett Silvertips finished 0-for-10 on the power play, and as a result fell 2-0 to the Kelowna Rockets. It was the first time Everett was shut out since losing 4-0 at Tri-City on Nov. 25.

Everett (29-18-2-1) came into the game leading the league in power-play efficiency at .209, and the Tips had four power-play goals in each of their last two games.

However, Everett had trouble just getting the puck into the offensive zone on the power play against the Rockets. Despite the 10 power plays, the Tips registered just 16 shots on goal.

Blake Comeau had a goal and an assist and Chris Ray also scored for Kelowna (31-15-1-2). Rockets goaltender Derek Yeomans earned his fourth shutout of the season.

Leland Irving made 28 saves in goal for Everett.

Kelowna showed Everett how to do it on the power play to take the lead just 4:49 into the game. Tyler Spurgeon's shot was saved by Irving, but Comeau was left all alone in front and he put in the rebound to give the Rockets the lead.

The score remained 1-0 until late in the game, with Everett failing to take advantage of numerous power-play opportunities. That included a 1:26 stretch of five-on-three in the second period.

Everett tried to turn up the pressure as the game went along, and the Tips did force Yeomans into some good saves in the second period. However, Everett was largely ineffectual in the third period, with Kelowna coming closest to scoring when Luke Schenn hit the post.

The Rockets finally put the game away with 3:00 remaining. The Tips got caught on a line change, allowing Ray to skate in free, and the Kelowna player beat Irving with a shot into the top shelf, making it 2-0.

Everett was missing all three players on one of its top lines. Peter Mueller, who was scheduled to return from a three-game absence due to a concussion, missed the game because of illness, Torrie Wheat was given the night off because of a bruised foot, and Karel Hromas was out with a cracked collarbone.

Everett did get two players back, with centers Mark Kress (shoulder) and Ryan Sawka (knee) both returning from injuries.
