I wonder if the Rebels will try and make a deal, similar to what Everett did, with Chilliwack with respect to the expansion draft.

If they dont, one can only guess on who they'll protect or would it be easier to guess on who they won't protect. Some interesting decisions will have to be made.

Might somebody summarize the rules with respect to the expansion draft? i.e. how many players the Rebels may protect, etc? My apologies if this info is on another post. Thanks in advance!

As far as I know, this is how the expansion draft works. Chilliwack will be able to select one player from the roster of each of the other 20 franchises. Each WHL team will be permitted to protect either 14 players born in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, or protect 12 players born in 1987, 1988, 1989 and three over-age players (1986). Players born in 1990 and 1991 are exempt.

Also, Vancouver and Portland are exempt form the draft because of trades made with Chilliwack earlier in the season. Therefore, Chilliwack will select 1 player from the remaining 18 teams instead of the 20 franchises.

I was under the impression that a team could lose up to two players in a expansion draft?

Except for Tri-Cities who will be giving up to 3 players in the expansion draft. That was part of the original Sale/Expansion Club deal that was made.

The BOG is probably settling the exact number of players that can be protected at the BOG meeting that is going on this week.

More info about the expansion draft is here.

3. Travis Biard (F) 89 4. Mathew Cline (F) 88
5. Luke Egner (D) 88 6. Bradley Eidness (G) 89
7. Ben Farrer (F) 88 8. Eric Frere (D) 88
9. Tanner Gillies (F) 87 10. Tyler Halliday (F) 89
11. Landen Hiebert (F) 89 12. Shawn Hunter (F) 89
13. Garrett Klotz (F) 88 14. Kyle Klym (F) 88
15. Jordan Knackstead (F) 88 16. Patrick Kozyra (D) 89
17. P.P. Lamoureux (D) 87 18. Devon Leblanc (F) 88
19. Paul Levarsky (D) 89 20. Vladimir Mihalik (D) 87
21. Ken Petkau (F) 87 22. Karey Pieper (F) 87
23. Evan Pighin (F) 88 24. Alex Poulter (F) 89
25. James Reimer (G) 88 26. Travis Rolheiser (G) 89
27. Justin Scott (F) 87 28. Jonathon Smith (D) 87

31. Ted Vandermeer (F) 86 32. Kris Versteeg (F) 86

Everett has also made a deal not to lose players......I don't think Portland has through.

Portland has made a deal with Chilliwack earlier in the season.

Hawks Avoid Expansion Draft, Trade Two List Players to Chilliwack
December 2, 2005 - Dean Vrooman

Portland, OR - The Portland Winter Hawks today traded two players from their 50-player protected list to the expansion Chilliwack Bruins for a “pass” in next June’s WHL expansion draft.

The Bruins, who begin play next season in 2006-07, will be allowed to take one player from each WHL team in the expansion draft. But, with this agreement, the Bruins receive two of Portland’s list players instead of having the right to make a choice from Portland’s roster in the draft.

Portland sent 16-year-old forward, Colby Kulhanek, and 15-year-old forward, Randy McNaught, to Chilliwack in the deal. Kulhanek, from Port Coquitlam, B.C., was Portland’s 8th round choice in the 2004 WHL Bantam Draft and McNaught, from Nanaimo, B.C., was Portland’s 9th round choice in the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft.

“This gives us more flexibility in making trades for players that will be 17 to 19 years old next season,” said General Manager Ken Hodge, who has acquired two such players in separate deals this week. “Now, we don’t have to be concerned about losing a player we trade for in the expansion draft because there would have been no way to protect them all. I think both Colby and Randy have a chance to become good players in our league and it is a tribute to our scouting staff that we have the depth in our system to make this kind of trade.”

If Kulhanek and McNaught both play 10 games in the WHL during the 2006-07 season, the Hawks receive a 7th round draft choice in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft as further compensation from Chilliwack.

I haven't heard about Everett. What were the particulars of trade/deal?
