Winnipeg, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings travel down the Trans Canada Highway to Winnipeg Wednesday night, where they will continue a critical 5-game home stand against the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The Wheat Kings, who will host the 'Canes at Brandon's Keystone Centre on Friday night before closing out the home stand Saturday against Moose Jaw, enter the game sitting in the fourth and final playoff spot in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division. The 19-25-5-3 Wheat Kings are currently two points up on Prince Albert in the battle for the fourth and final playoff spot. Brandon also has one game in hand.

This marks Brandons second trip to the MTS Centre this season and the Wheat Kings will be hoping for a better result this time around. Back on December 10th, the Wheat Kings fell 3-2 to Regina in a game that saw Brandon outshoot the visiting Pats to the tune of 38-22.

Brandon won't be the only Eastern Division club getting its fair share of home games over the next while. The Raiders are in a stretch of seven of eight games on home ice, with their lone road trip to Brandon. Meanwhile the Regina Pats play eight of their next ten on home ice, while the Moose Jaw Warriors have four of thier next six at home.

The Wheat Kings enter Wednesday's game, having collected at least a point in seven of their last eight home games including last Friday's come from behind 2-1 overtime victory over the Swift Current Broncos.

While the Wheat Kings have fourteen Manitobans including three Winnipeggers on their current roster, the 'Canes feature three from the Keystone province. Among Brandon's local products is 18-year old center Codey Burki, who currently leads the club in scoring with seventeen goals and 37 points. Colton Yellow Horn leads Lethbridge in scoring with 52 points including seventeen goals.

Brandon is currently without 16-year old rookie defenceman Keith Aulie and 18-year old center Tyler Strautman. While Aulie is expected to return from a neck injury within the next week, Strautman could be gone for a lot longer. The Leduc, Alberta native has separated his shoulder three times this season and is facing possible surgery.

Brandon, Manitoba -- After setting a franchise record for Most Shutouts in a Single Season - six - during his rookie Western Hockey League season last winter, 18-year old netminder Tyler Plante picked up his first "goose egg" of the 2005-06 campaign Wednesday night in Winnipeg as the Wheat Kings blanked the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-0.

A second round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers, Plante turned aside 24 shots in earning his seventh career WHL shutout, moving him into a tie with Byron Penstock for third place on the club's all time list. Only Jamie Hodson and Glen Hanlon, the current coach of the NHL's Washington Capitals collected more during their playing days in Brandon - eight.

Wednesday's win, coupled with Prince Albert's 3-2 loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers, leaves Brandon four points up on the Raiders in the battle for the fourth and final playoff in the WHL's Eastern Division. The Wheat Kings also have a game in hand.

Rookie center Tyler Dittmer, with his ninth and tenth goals of the season, led Brandon offensively Wednesday night. Captain Teegan Moore, Corey Courchene and defenceman Daryl Boyle also scored for the Wheat Kings, who will be hoping to complete a sweep of this week's 2-game series with the Hurricanes on Friday night at the Keystone Centre.

Brandon enters weekend play with a record of 20-25-5-3, including a 13-8-4 mark on home ice where the Wheat Kings have managed to collect at least a point in eight of their last 9 home games.

The Wheat Kings, who are currently in a stretch that will see them play seven of eight games on home ice, will close out their current 5-game WHL home stand Saturday night against the Eastern Division leading Moose Jaw Warriors.
