Rookie goalie Chet Pickard posted his third shutout of the season and Logan Stephenson and Ian McDonald each had a four-point night as the Tri-City Americans beat the host Portland Winter Hawks 6-0 in Western Hockey League play at Memorial Coliseum.

Pickard stopped all 34 Portland shots, including a penalty shot by Brian Woolger at 2:39 of the second period.

Stephenson and McDonald each had one goal and three assists. It was McDonald's 30th goal of the season, and he ranks second in the WHL in scoring with 73 points.

Juraj Gracik, in his first game after missing two weeks because of an appendectomy, scored two goals. Matt Schneider and Aaron Boogaard also scored for the Americans (23-25-4-3, 53 points), who are in third place in the U.S. Division.

Tri-Cities will play host to Portland on Friday and Spokane on Saturday.

I am looking forward to the games this weekend. Hopefully the solid play will continue to get some breathing room in the standings.
