Giants Defeat T-Birds

Seattle faces division rival Tri-City on Sunday
Vancouver, BC, February 18, 2006 - The Vancouver Giants defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-1 Saturday night in front of 10,280 at Pacific Coliseum.

With the win Saturday night and the a 5-0 victory Friday night in KeyArena, the Giants won both games of a weekend home-and-home series between the teams.

The T-Birds are 27-25-1-4 and are in second place in the US Division. The T-Birds take on the Tri-City Americans Sunday night at 5:05 p.m. at KeyArena.

The Giants took a 1-0 lead at 2:40 of the first period with a power-play goal by Gilbert Brule. Spencer Machacek had the only assist.

Vancouver (41-14-0-6) outshot Seattle 12-6 in the first period.

Michal Repik put the Giants up 2-0 at 2:21 of the second period. Mark Fistric had the only assist on the goal which came just as a Giants power play ended.

Vancouver took a 3-0 lead at 12:43 of the second on a power-play goal by Cody Franson. Paul Albers and Brule had the assists.

The Giants led 29-14 in shots on goal going into the second intermission after outshooting the T-Birds 17- 8 in the period.

Paul Albers put the Giants up 4-0 with a power-play goal 37 seconds into the third period. Franson and Mitch Bartley had the assists.

Aaron Gagnon got the T-Birds on the board at 6:31 of the third with an unassisted goal. Gagnon got to a loose puck between the circles and beat Vancouver goalie Dustin Slade with a wrist shot. It was Gagnon’s 19th goal of the year.

Seattle goalie Kevin Opsahl made 31 saves on 35 shots and his record fell to 18-18-0-4.

Slade made 23 saves on 24 shots and his record is now 32-10-0-5.
