Multiplex Committee Applies for Grants

Grants, funding, financial commitments. No matter how you say it money is the focus of the Moose Jaw Multiplex Committee right now as they try to secure enough funds to help build a 40 million dollar multipurpose facility.

The project was approved by Moose Jaw City Council in December with a 15 million-dollar commitment. The rest needs to come from government grants or public fundraising.

Committee Co-chair Ray Boughen says they don’t plan to kick off the fundraising campaign just yet. “We’re going to do that later on in the spring probably in March. We have a couple of issues we have to come to grips with before we go to the general public and that'll be a March date."

Those issues are securing enough funds from the provincial and federal governments. Boughen says both levels have shown interest how much funding that turns into is still up in the air. "Both levels of government have looked favorably upon the project and I'm sure there will be financial involvement there but we're just not sure of what it will be at this time."

It may all come down to fundraising and the federal government.

We have learned the provincial government has said no when it comes to extra funding to help build a new multipurpose facility for Moose Jaw.

City Manager Gary McKay explains a local group including members of the multiplex committee met with our local MLA recently to discuss funding.

"Mr. Hagel and Mrs. Higgins relayed to us that there are no additional current programs that we could access to get additional funding for the communiplex. They relayed to us that at this juncture, unless there a new program comes forward that they could apply across the province, there is no additional funding."

So with the city providing 15 million dollars towards to 40 million-dollar project, the remaining 25 million was supposed to come from provincial and federal grants as well as community and corporate fundraising. But McKay says it looks like they'll be asking the federal government for a little bit more when they meet later this week.
