The Tri-City Americans dropped their fifth straight game Saturday but moved one step closer to the Western Hockey League playoffs.

Ben Maxwell scored two goals to lead the Kootenay Ice to a 3-2 win over the Americans in Cranbrook, British Columbia.

Tri-Cities (27-32-4-3, 61 points) opened the scoring on a first-period power play when Ian McDonald scored on a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that beat Taylor Dakers stick side.

The Ice tied the game with Maxwell's first goal, beating Carey Price high on the glove side. Kootenay (41-22-1-3) made it 2-1 on a power-play goal by Steve DaSilva, who crashed the net and popped in a loose puck.

Keith Voytechek also scored for the Americans, who dropped into fourth place in the U.S. Division after Portland beat Kelowna 2-1 and clinched a playoff berth.

Spokane (21-37-5-3, 50 points) trails Tri-Cities by 11 points for the fourth and final playoff spot in the U.S. Division. A Tri-City victory or a Spokane loss puts the Americans in the playoffs.
