Third period dooms T-birds
By JIM RILEY

Special to The Seattle Times

With another horrible third period, the Seattle Thunderbirds have turned the race for second place and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs into a sprint to the finish.

The T-birds gave up four goals to the Spokane Chiefs, a team already eliminated from the playoffs and one that came into the game 0 for 2006 on the road.

Spokane had lost 16 road games in a row before beating Seattle 7-4 on Sunday at KeyArena. Spokane hadn't won away from home since Dec. 28 in Prince George.

If that sounds bad, consider the T-birds gave up 13 goals in two losses at home this weekend to fall to 32-30-1-5 heading into the final week of the season.

Seattle leads Portland by four points in the U.S. Division with four games remaining.

Spokane, 23-38-5-3, had two goals from Adam Hobson and scores by J.P. Szaszkiewicz, Derek Ryan, Judd Blackwater, Drayson Bowman and Michael Grabner.

For Grabner, it was his 33rd goal of the season.

"We still have a lot of pride and respect," Grabner said. "Seattle played all right, but we just scored some goals tonight. Their goalie didn't play too well. Normally, [Bryan] Bridges is way better than that. I think he just had an off night."

Bridges gave up five goals on 22 shots before being pulled for Kevin Opsahl, who surrendered the last two goals of the game.

The game was tied 3-3 heading to the third period, but Spokane quickly made it 5-3 with scores by J.P. Szaszkiewicz, his second of the season, and Derek Ryan.

Bud Holloway answered for Seattle, but Judd Blackwater scored to put away the win.

Holloway had a pair of goals for Seattle and now has 20 this season, but hitting that mark gave him little solace as his team gave away a chance to win in the third period for the second night in a row.

"It seems like we just have a mental lapse in the third period," Holloway said. "We play a pretty good game, but you can't give up three or four goals in the third period like we did last night and tonight." The T-birds travel Wednesday to Kennewick to meet the Tri-City Americans.

"Nice effort" for parents weekend birds

Can Durand stink any worse? Future draft re-entry?
