Winter Hawks Slip by T-Birds

Pess, Klinkhammer score in 3-2 loss to Portland
Portland, March 18, 2006 - The Portland Winter Hawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-2 Saturday night in front of 9,148 at the Rose Garden.

By winning Saturday night the Winter Hawks have secured third place in the US Division and will be the T-Birds opponent in the first round of the playoffs.

The T-Birds have home-ice advantage for the first round best-of-seven playoff series. Game 1 will be Friday, March 24 at 7:05 p.m. at KeyArena. Game 2 will be Saturday, March 25 at 7:05 p.m. at KeyArena.

The series switches to Portland for Games 3 and 4. These two teams will match up on Tuesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. and Friday, March 31 at 7 p.m. Both of these games will be in the Rose Garden.

Game 5 will be Saturday, April at 7:05 p.m. at KeyArena. Game 6 is Tuesday, April 4 at 7 p.m. at the Rose Garden. Game 7 is scheduled for Wednesday, April 5 at 7:05 p.m. at KeyArena. The last three games of the series are all if necessary games.

The T-Birds finished with an 8-2-1-1 record against the Winter Hawks in the 12-game season series.

Seattle (34-31-1-5) took a 1-0 lead at 3:56 of the first period. Lindsay Nielsen brought the puck into the Portland zone on the right side. Nielsen dropped the puck to Thomas Hickey at the right point. Hickey sent the puck back to Nielsen who was just right of the Winter Hawks net. Nielsen centered the puck to Kyle Pess who beat Portland goalie Kurtis Mucha low for his 19th goal of the year.

The Winter Hawks outshot the T-Birds 12-5 in the first period.

John Bubnick tied the game 1-1 with a power-play goal at 11:07 of the second period. Michael Funk and Frazer McLaren had the assists.

Kyle Bailey scored a power-play goal at 16:49 of the second to give the Winter Hawks a 2-1 lead. Brian Woolger and Bubnick had the assists.

Portland outshot Seattle 9-5 in the second period and led 21-10 in shots after two periods.

Portland (31-32-3-5) took a 3-1 lead on a goal by Thomas Frazee at 8:31 of the third period. Sasha Golin and Scott Gabriel had the assists.


Seattle cut the Portland lead to one goal when Robert Klinkhammer scored a power-play goal at 12:32 of the third.
Jeremy Schappert and Lindsay Nielsen had the assists. The goal initially looked like Schappert had scored it, but Klinkhammer was credited with the goal.

Seattle pulled goalie Kevin Opsahl with just over a minute left in the game to try and tie the game.

The Winter Hawks finished the game with a 29-14 advantage in shots on goal.

Opsahl stopped 26 of 29 shots and his record fell to 19-21-0-4.

Mucha stopped 12 of 14 shots and his record is now 13-9-1-3.

Seattle finishes out the regular season against the Everett Silvertips on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. at KeyArena.
