Brandon, Manitoba – The 2005-2006 Western Hockey League season has turned out to be quite the year for veteran Brandon Wheat Kings’ left-winger Mark Derlago, who was one of three multiple winners at the club’s Awards Banquet Sunday night in the Keystone Centre’s UCT Pavillion.

A former Manitoba AAA Midget League scoring champion, Derlago capped off an outstanding season when he was chosen this year’s winner of the Manitoba Hydro Turk Broda Trophy for being the team’s Top Manitoba Born Player as well as the Meighen Haddad & Co. Most Valuable Player honours.

Chosen the Wheat Kings’ Rookie of the Year in 2003-04 after scoring eight goals and 28 points, the former AAA midget Wheat King missed the entire 2004-05 season after breaking his neck during the club’s final pre-season game in September 2004.

One of eight local products on this year’s club, Derlago finished second in Wheat Kings’ scoring this season with 53 points in 72 games including a team leading twenty-eight goals.

Joining Derlago as two-time winners Sunday night were goalkeeper Tyler Plante and Finnish born left-winger Sami Sandell. The 2005 WHL Rookie of the Year, Plante captured the Molson Cup for winning the team’s 3-Star Program as well as the Capitol Theatre Most Popular Player honours. Sandell meanwhile took home the Simplot John Scott Kent Most Sportsmanlike Player Trophy as well as the Dennis Truscott UCT Trophy for being chosen the Wheat Kings’ Most Improved Player.

Other winners Sunday night included 18-year old center Codey Burki, who was recently chosen the Fans’ Choice for Shoppers Mall Player of the Year. The former first round bantam draft choice won the Brandon Sun Trophy for leading the club in scoring with 27 goals and 61 points in seventy games.

Rounding out the list of winners were captain Teegan Moore (Tri-Star Screenprinting Hardest Working Player), Stephane Lenoski (McDonalds Frank King Most Community Minded), 16-year old defenceman Keith Aulie (Husky Scholastic Player of the Year), Theran Yeo (Coca Cola Bottling Ollie Stark Most Inspirational Player), Tyler Dittmer (CKX TV Rookie of the Year), Daryl Boyle (Wheat Kings’ Executive Defenceman of the Year) as well as 20-year old blueliner Riley Day, who won the A Plus Trophies Art Marshall Memorial Trophy for being chosen the club’s Top Graduating Player.

The Wheat Kings will now begin preparations for their best of seven opening round playoff series against the Eastern Division pennant winning Moose Jaw Warriors, scheduled to get underway Friday, March 24th in the “Crushed Can”. Games three and four of the series will be played at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, due to a scheduling conflict with the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.
