One of the league's toughest players turned out to be an unlikely hero Saturday night as the Brandon Wheat Kings upset the Moose Jaw Warriors 2-1 to even up their best of seven Western Hockey League opening round playoff series at one game each.

18-year old defenceman Theran Yeo moved up to play left-wing in game two and scored the game winner - finishing off a pretty pass from Dustin Kohn - two and a half minutes into the third period.

In 61 regular season games, Yeo scored three goals including a game winner against the Raiders in a visit to his hometown of Prince Albert.

The series will now shift to Winnipeg's MTS Centre for games three and four on Monday and Thursday nights. Puck drop is at seven and tickets are on sale now at the MTS Centre box office, by calling 780-3333 or (in person) at the Keystone Centre box office.

"I thought it was a good response by our team," Brandon coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon told Bruce Luebke on CKLQ's post-game show Saturday night. "I didn't think we played well on Friday...tonight, we battled hard."

After a scoreless opening period, captain Teegan Moore got Brandon on the board in the opening minutes of the second. The Warriors then tied it midway through the middle frame when 17-year old Riley Holzapfel buried a rebound behind Brandon netminder Tyler Plante, who like Yeo, was a Wheat King hero in game two.

A second round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers, Plante turned aside 39 shots on Saturday night including seventeen in the third period.

Another key to the win was Brandon's penalty killing, keeping the Warriors from scoring on all seven chances. The Wheat Kings meanwhile were 0-6 with the man advantage.

The game was played before 2,500 fans at the "Crushed Can". Some fans went a little too far with their enthusiasm, littering the ice with bottles after the final buzzer. As well, several fights broke out in the crowd and according to reporters on the scene, several tried to get at the Brandon players as they were leaving the ice.

The Wheat Kings will depart for Winnipeg on Sunday and have scheduled a game day skate on Monday morning at the MTS Centre.

Good work last night Brandon. I was suprised, but you're going to need to work a lot harder. Plante played great and there were some nice goals. Sloppy errors on our part though.

Anybody know if Daryl Boyle is okay? Will he be playing in game 3?

... which is what makes seeing the tied-series so much sweeter!

I'm sure that it helps that Brandon went so far in the playoffs last season, especially with Plante in goal. But the Wheatkings are going to have to maintain a very high level of play if they have any hope of winning this series. Moose Jaw is loaded with offensive talent.

Good luck, Brandon, with the rest of the series! :thumb:

Hurt in game 1. I don't know the extent of the injury though.

Yeo has been suspended but length undetermined.Warriors also fined $2,500.

This is okay.Yeo helps but is no Kohn or Boyle...shouldn't damper our spirits anyways. It's not like Yeo plays the PP.Hopefully Dittmer is back and Boyle is okay to go tonight.

i think yeo is a huge loss for you guys. his tough brand of physical play is good for the playoffs. do you think this hurt his chances of being drafted ?

He's a loss, but not a huge loss.If we don't have Boyle tonight we are in trouble, but we should be fine.We have players more than capable of stepping in.It won't have any side effects to Yeo being drafted.Scouts already know what Yeo brings. In my opinion,if someone grabbed me and tossed stuff at me,they would have gotten worse than a punch.

But what gives fans rights to throw things, swear at players and call on these athletes anyways? You lost.

One things forsure Warriors and your "fans",your players won't be treated like that because we have respect for others unlike the tools in your "box".

Led by two of their hottest players during the final month of the regular season, the Brandon Wheat Kings dumped the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors 3-2 Monday night to grab a 2-1 lead in their best of seven Western Hockey League Eastern Division semi-final series.

Netminder Tyler Plante turned aside 33 shots including twenty-five through the first two periods of play and veteran left-winger Mark Derlago's powerplay goal at the 8:10 mark of the third period proved to be the difference for the Wheat Kings, who are meeting Moose Jaw in post-season play for the second straight season and third time in the past four years.

Game four of the series is scheduled for Thursday night at the MTS Centre, with game five set to go on Sunday night back at the "Crushed Can" in Moose Jaw.

Monday's goal was the second of the playoffs for Derlago, who scored six during the final three regular season games. A second round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers, Plante compiled a stellar 2.91 goals against average and a .905 save percentage in eight regular season appearances this month.

Brandon jumped out to a first period in game three, on goals by Sami Sandell and captain Teegan Moore. The Wheat Kings then thought they had taken a commanding 3-0 lead late in the opening frame but an apparent goal by Ryan Reaves was waved off by referee Chris Savage. Video replays clearly showed that the puck went in off the right leg of Warriors' Blair Jones, who was sprawled out in the crease behind Moose Jaw goalkeeper Joey Perricone.

The Warriors got one back in the second when Jones rifled a wrist shot past Plante. Moose Jaw then tied it seven minutes into the third when Kenndal McArdle beat the Brandon netminder upstairs.

Brandon wound up going 1-7 with the man advantage while the Warriors were 1-6.

With Monday's victory, the Wheat Kings improved their lifetime record at the MTS Centre to 9-1-0 (2-0-0 in post season play). Tickets to game four are on sale now at the MTS Centre box office, by calling 780-3333, online at ticketmaster.ca or (in person) at the Keystone Centre box office.

In off-ice news, The WHL has slapped the Warriors' organization with a hefty fine and suspended Brandon's Theran Yeo indefinitely following a post-game incident in Moose Jaw on Saturday night.

The Warriors were hit with a $2,500 fine - the largest fine allowable under league bylaws - for inadequate security that allowed fans to confront members of the visiting Wheat Kings when they left the ice. Moose Jaw fans littered the ice with water bottles and debris after the final buzzer. As well, a number of fans were involved in a brief skirmish with security personnel and Brandon players. An 18-year old native of Prince Albert, Yeo was suspended for throwing a punch after he'd been punched by a Moose Jaw fan.

The WHL says that the length of Yeo's suspension will be announced on Tuesday, following further review of videotape evidence.

wow Wheaties.. have to admit I frankly didn't expect you to have a chance versus The Warriors but good on ya..

must feel good after that fan debacle in MJ to get the W ... after your season it must be nice to get some good games in the playoffs - it's a whole new season, good luck

Nobody wants to give us a chance, and noboby thinks we have a chance.

Being the under dog you come in and you don't have a ton of expectations, and nobody expects anything from you,but people are surprised we have even won 2 games.Nobody seems to realize that we have turned our season around from the beginning. Our guys know what it takes and feel as if we can compete.

This isn't David vs Goliath..it's sports and the playoffs and anything can happen in the "real season".

Whether MJ comes back to win the series or we happen to move on,I'm still proud to be a Wheatking fan and proud what this team has done in our rebuilding year.

What should be more of a shock to people is the fact that we keep playing good hockey while having the worst PP and PK in the league, yet we find ways to win.

Next season should be VERY exciting with the guys we have coming back.

I am very pleased with the way we have played against the warriors. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that if we hit the Warriors at every oppurtunity we will take them off of there game and thats what were doing. Plus it helps when we got the best goalie in the league IMO backstopping us. He wills steal at least one more game for us this series.

Sorry, but Pogge is the best goalie in the league.I'd say Pogge is the best goalie in the CHL. But Plante has been playing very well.

Winnipeg, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference quarterfinal series between the Brandon Wheat Kings and Moose Jaw Warriors has turned into a best of three affair.

After splitting the 8-game regular season series, the Wheat Kings and Warriors are deadlocked at two games each in their best of seven opening round playoff series, thanks to Moose Jaw's 4-1 victory before 4,400 fans at the MTS Centre Thursday night.

The Warriors won the game in the third period - a period that they dominated in from start to finish, outshooting Brandon 17-5 and scoring three unanswered goals including a pair from local product Dustin Boyd.

Boyd scored what proved to be the game winner at the 2:17 mark of the third period and after Troy Brouwer's controversial goal at the 7:30 mark, he added an insurance marker with less than eight minutes to play in regulation time.

Brouwer's goal came after a clearing attempt appeared to bank off a stick at the Moose Jaw bench. After speaking with his two linesmen following the goal, referee Kyle Rehman elected to let the goal stand and the Warriors never looked back.

Andre Herman had the other Moose Jaw goal while Mark Derlago, with his third goal in four playoff games, scored in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, who will now travel to the Civic Centre for game five of the series on Sunday night. Game six is scheduled for Tuesday night at the Keystone Centre. Puck drop is at seven and tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca

Thursday's win snapped a 7-game losing streak in Winnipeg for the Warriors, who moved to Moose Jaw from the Manitoba capital at the conclusion of the 1983-84 campaign. Brandon is now 9-2-0 lifetime at the new MTS Centre.

This is the second straight year and third time in the past four seasons that Brandon and Moose Jaw have met in post-season play.

Moose Jaw, Sask. -- One goal is all it took Sunday night for the Moose Jaw Warriors to beat the Brandon Wheat Kings and push the defending Western Hockey League Eastern Conference Champions to the brink of elimination.

Former Red Deer Rebel Blair Jones' goal at the 6:10 mark of the second period was the difference Sunday night as the Warriors blanked Brandon 1-0 to take a 3-2 lead in their best of seven opening round playoff series.

Joey Perricone earned the shutout for the Warriors, turning aside 26 shots including eleven in the second and eight more in the third period as the Wheat Kings tried desparately to even the score. Tyler Plante was solid in a losing cause, stopping 30 of 31 Moose Jaw shots including thirteen in period two.

A native of California, Perricone has compiled an impressive 1.45 goals against average and a .939 save percentage in this series. Ironically, this series marks the first time in Wheat Kings' playoff history that two U.S. born goalkeepers have faced off against one another. While Perricone was born in San Juan Capistrano, Plante was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin while his father Cam was playing for the International Hockey League's Admirals. The 2005 WHL Rookie of the Year, who appeared in 24 playoff games last spring, has posted an impressive 2.69 goals against average and a stellar .929 save percentage against Moose Jaw.

Game six of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night at the Keystone Centre, with the Wheat Kings hoping to find the net. Since taking a 2-1 series lead last Monday night, the Wheat Kings have scored just one goal in back to back losses to the regular season East Division pennant winners.

Puck drop on Tuesday night is 7 p.m., with tickets on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca This will be Brandon's first true "home" game of this series as the Wheat Kings were forced to play games three and four at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, due to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. 94.7 Star FM and 880 CKLQ have also announced plans to host a pre-game Tailgate Party in the Heritage Co-op parking lot from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

It drives me crazy, having the Royal manitoba winter fair when it is spring, let alone when it's playoff time. If you are a Brandon fan, you come to accept it though, it has been happening as long as i can remember, the Fair should be in Winnipeg or elsewhere cause not playing at home really gives the other team a huge advantage, esspecially in this case where the Wheaties are the underdogs

Yes, I agree that is pretty stupid. You cheer for your team for a whole season, they make the playoffs and then you have to drive to Winnipeg if you wanna watch the playoffs. That's dumb. But at least you're back home now.

Burki, Topilko and Dittmer

Brandon, Manitoba -- The defending Western Hockey League Eastern Conference Champion Brandon Wheat Kings certainly know what is at stake Tuesday night as they continue final preparations for game six of their best of seven opening round playoff series with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

After losing back to back games including Sunday's disappointing 1-0 decision in Moose Jaw, the Wheat Kings find themselves with their backs against the wall, trailing the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series three games to two.

"We've been in this situation before and now we ask ourselves now, can we beat Moose Jaw one time in our building," Brandon general manager and head coach Kelly McCrimmon told CKLQ's Bruce Luebke on Monday. "We shorten our focus to the simple fact of can we beat Moose Jaw on Tuesday in Brandon and we don't need to think any further ahead that that."

The Wheat Kings have one thing going for them on Tuesday and that is facing elimination is nothing really new to them. Brandon faced a similar situation five times in the 2005 WHL playoffs, winning four of those games.

In order to be successful in forcing a seventh and deciding game back in Moose Jaw on Wednesday night, the Wheat Kings need to find a way to beat Warriors' goalkeeper Joey Perricone. The California product has given up just seven goals in five games, compiling a brilliant .929 save percentage in the process. In fact, Brandon has scored just one goal in its back to back losses in games four and five.

While veteran left-winger Mark Derlago, who led the team with 28 goals during the regular season, has three of Brandon's 7 goals in this series, several veterans including Codey Burki and Jeff Topilko have yet to find the net. Burki had 27 goals and 61 points to lead the Wheat Kings in scoring during the regular season while Topilko scored six goals during last spring's post-season.

McCrimmon says despite the club's lack of production, he's confident that its hard work will pay off.

"It's been very close, good goaltending at both ends. Even though we got shut out on Sunday, I thought our offence worked hard and we did have a lot of chances."

While Perricone has been outstanding for the Warriors, so has Brandon's Tyler Plante. A second round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers, Plante has posted a 2.69 goals against average and a stellar .929 save percentage through the first five games of this series. The 2005 WHL Rookie of the Year will be starting his 30th consecutive playoff game for the Wheat Kings on Tuesday.

Tuesday's game will be Brandon's first real "home" game in close to three weeks and as of 5 p.m. Monday, only 2,400 tickets had been sold for the game. The Wheat Kings attracted 7,500 fans to a pair of playoff home games at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg last week.
Tickets are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca

Fans are also encouraged to take in the 94.7 Star FM / 880 CKLQ Playoff Tailgate Party from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in the Heritage Co-op parking lot.
