It has never been disclosed as to what state they live in.

Springfield is the most common city name in the USA so the writers toy with the location all the time.

Some figure its Oregon, some Kentucky, some Illinois, some Ohio

There are different reasons for each, but no solid answer

Doesnt really answer your question, but gives you some insight.

Springfield NewJersey. Home of the Bakerys "Dough" As New York City is the center of the American universe the outskirts only make sense. New Jersey has some great skate board ramps for Bart, many 7-11's for Apoo amd tons of pubs for Homer. This is not to mention the road trips Lisa can take to New York for museams and go to Washington to see the White House. As for Marge the NJPD love to have blue haired realtor and policewomen. She would probably be close enough to the major gamblinig center out there as well. Come to think of it New Jersey leagalized pot for patients with eye disorders "Toke as Needed.

It's Kentucky! I realized it a few months ago! Near the end of the episode "Behind The Laughter" the narrator says something along the lines of "In this small Kentucky town..."
