Dietrich breaks his ankle
Silvertips left winger out for up to six weeks

EVERETT - Just when the Everett Silvertips were finally getting healthy again, the injury hex struck again.

Left wing Tyler Dietrich suffered a fractured ankle Saturday night during Everett's 2-0 home victory over Seattle, meaning the Silvertips will once again be deprived of one of their top offensive players.

"He's a significant member of our team, so it's no fun not having him," Everett coach Kevin Constantine said. "But we've been through this. We've got to find ways to win games no matter who's on the ice."

Dietrich suffered the injury six minutes into the first period when he was checked into the boards. He was visibly upset after the hit, slamming his fists into the ice, and had to be assisted into the locker room.

The injury occured just as Everett was overcoming a rash of injuries to forwards that forced the Silvertips to field as many as 10 defensemen.

The good news for Everett is Dietrich's injury is not considered season ending. He's expected to miss six weeks, meaning that if his recovery goes as scheduled, he should return for the final week of the regular season.

The bad news is that Everett, already a team with limited creative capabilities, must now find alternate sources of offense. The Silvertips have scored two or fewer goals in each of their past eight games, and when Dietrich missed 11 games in January because of a concussion, Everett went 3-8 in his absence.

The 20-year-old Dietrich, one of Everett's three overage players, is third on the team in scoring with 26 points and tied for second on the team with 13 goals.

Dietrich's two seasons in Everett have been riddled with injuries. Expected to be one of Everett's top offensive threats last season, he played in just 30 games during the regular season because of various shoulder injuries. He then played in just eight of Everett's 21 playoff games after suffering a separate concussion.

"He's had injuries and it's unfortunate," Constantine said. "I feel bad for him in that regard, it's been very challenging for him. It's always mentally tough to sit out and it's harder to be injured than people understand."

Constantine said he doesn't know who will fill Dietrich's spot just yet. During the remainder of Saturday's game, Michael Wuchterl and Zach Sim took turns filling the vacant slot on the line with center Zach Hamill and right wing Brady Calla.
