Knights Finish Season With Win
April 16, 2006 - The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights completed their inaugural American Hockey League season on an up note, beating the San Antonio Rampage 4-3 on Sunday at the AT&T Center. Brandon Prust scored the winning goal on a powerplay in the last minute of the game.
The Knights grabbed the lead just 2:22 into the game. Cam Cunning stole a clearing pass in the left wing corner and threw it in front to Adam Cracknell who tipped home his first professional goal.
The Knights doubled their lead on their first powerplay of the game. Carsen Germyn hurried a shot on goal from the left point. Justin Taylor tipped it past goalie Karl Goehring to make it 2-0 after one.
The Rampage regrouped in the second period, getting a goal from Randall Gelech and a powerplay tally from Layne Ulmer to tie the game at two.
Before the period had ended, the Knights had retaken the lead. While on the powerplay, Tim Hambly pinched down the left wing to keep the puck alive. It trickled to Eric Nystrom who threw a pass out in front to Ajay Baines who knocked in his 12th goal of the year. That put the Knights up 3-2 after two.
The Rampage once again battled back in the third and Ulmer tied the game converting a rebound for his team-leading 19th goal of the season.
But the Knights were handed a powerplay with 1:34 when Rampage defenseman Dwayne Zinger was given a tripping penalty. Germyn took a pass from Hambly at the left point and threw a wrist shot on goal. Prust reached out to steer it past Goehring for the game winner. It was his 12th goal of the year.
Brent Krahn made 29 saves to earn his career high 26th win of the year.
The Knights finish the season with a record of 35-31-3-11. They were 16-13-2-9 at home and 19-18-1-2 on the road. The win snapped an eight-game winless streak.
