Wheat Kings' Prospects Camp this Weekend

by: Bruce Luebke, Sports Director, 880 CKLQ/94.7 STAR-FM

The Brandon Wheat Kings will hold their 2006 Prospects Camp this weekend at the Kinsmen Arena.
The three-day session will include the roughly thirty players that are on the club's 50-man protected list but were not part of the active roster last season.
'Obviously we continue to scout the players during the season but I think it gives us a chance to look at them again in a camp environment and see how far they've come,' says Wheat Kings' General Manager Kelly MCrimmon, 'I think it gives us a real good head start on what we think our lineup could be coming out of the fall camp.'
2006 first round bantam pick Brayden Schenn of Saskatoon will not be in Brandon this weekend, missing the camp due to family commitments, while '06 second rounder Scott Glennie is injured and will not participate.
However, all of the club other 2006 Bantam picks will be in attendance and be exposed to the Western Hockey League club for the first time.
'For the young guys, its a chance to get a feel for the organization that drafted them and, in most cases, we'll all be meeting each other for the first time,' adds McCrimmon, 'I think it lets them develop an impression and get a feel for the Brandon Wheat Kings as quick as we can after having drafted the player.'
Among the players that will attend is 2005 first round pick Sanfred King of Brandon and reigning Manitoba AAA Midget League scoring champion Nathan Green of Winnipeg.
There are five on-ice sessions that are open to the public with Team Black practices at 4:00 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Team Gold practices at 5:30 p.m. Friday and 9:00 a.m. Saturday with an intrasquad game slated for 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Brandon, Manitoba -- Brandon Lockerby and Nathan Green scored two goals each Sunday afternoon as the Blacks blanked the Whites 6-0 in the Wheat Kings' Annual Spring Prospects Intrasquad Game at the Kinsmen Arena.

A seventh round draft choice of the Wheat Kings in 2003, Lockerby spent the 2005-06 campaign with the AAA Midget Wheat Kings. Green meanwhile played with the Winnipeg Wild and is a former fourth round bantam draft choice of Brandon.

Jordan Hale and Cale Jefferies also scored for the winners, who received a 31 save performance from the netminding tandem of Christian Chivilo and Andrew Hayes.

Hale was a second round draft pick of the Wheat Kings in 2005; Jefferies was chosen in round nine of the 2004 draft; Chivilo was taken in the eighth round of the 2004 draft while Hayes was picked in round three of last year's draft.

A total of 28 players including Sanfred King attended this weekend's camp. A 16-year old local product, King was Brandon's first round selection (17th overall) in the 2005 WHL bantam draft.

Brandon's top prospects skated before Wheat Kings' general manager Kelly McCrimmon, assistant coach Brad Wells as well as the club's director of player personnel Al Macpherson
