The Spokane Chiefs have released 19-year-old defenseman Phil Magistrale from their roster. The two-year veteran was acquired in January and appeared in 10 games in Spokane before suffering a season ending knee injury.

“With the depth that we have returning on defense and the addition of a few younger players we felt it was important to make the move at this time to give Phil an opportunity to catch on with another organization,” Chiefs Head Coach Bill Peters said.

Magistrale scored two goals and nine points last season has played in 58 games in two years between Tri-City and Spokane.

Not sure why you would do this before the expansion draft, why not just leave him as unprotected in the expansion draft and then if Chilliwack does not pick him , then release. Any words of wisdom on this ?

Any words of wisdom on this ?When they drop a player from the list, it is to add another, and if they wait till after the expansion draft, someone else might list the player they want to add.

I see that this is a possibility, however unless he is from 90,91 and u don,t protect him in the draft u could still lose him , right ?

I see that this is a possibility, however unless he is from 90,91 and u don,t protect him in the draft u could still lose him , right ?Indeed. Assumedly the player they listed is a 90 or 91, though it is also in their best interest to make their list as deep as they possibly can prior to the expansion draft, as it will increase their chances of hanging on to a character player or 2 that they might normally lose (Magistrale has about as much chance of being picked in the expansion draft, as he does winning the lottery).
