Bishop leaves Chiefs for family reasons
06/01/06 - Western Hockey League (WHL) Spokane Chiefs
Darcy Bishop, the Chiefs Athletic Therapist for the past five seasons, has announced he will be leaving the organization for family reasons.

"This decision was all about family," Bishop said. "With our current dynamics and the special needs that arise from those, this was a decision that was best for everyone. It was both an easy and difficult decision to make."

"We understand Darcy's situation and his wish to spend more time with his family," Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz said. "We wish Darcy, Laura and their family all the best and we will always consider them a part of the Chief family."

This past year, Bishop was the Equipment Manger for Team Canada's Under-18 Junior World Cup team, winning a silver medal, and the gold medal winning World Junior Hockey Championship team. Bishop had previously served as the Head Athletic Therapist for Canada's 1998 National Junior Hockey team and the 1996 gold medal winning Under-18 team.

In January, Bishop's son, Graydon, was diagnosed with Leukemia which prompted Western Hockey League trainers to create the Graydon Bishop Medical Fund. To date, member WHL clubs, the Spokane Chiefs have helped raise over $50,000 to help the Bishop family cover medical costs.

"We moved to this area with little knowledge of the wonderful people that support this community," Bishop said. "We now have life long friends and a lovely family and now embrace Spokane as a home."

The Chiefs will immediately begin to search and fill the roles of Athletic Therapist and Equipment Manager. Interested applicants are encouraged to send a resume to fanmail@spokanechiefs.com.
