The Western Hockey League today held an Expansion Draft for the League's newest member club, the Chilliwack Bruins.

Players born in 1990 and 1991 were exempt from the draft. The Bruins were able to select one player from each team with the exception of the Kamloops Blazers, Medicine Hat Tigers, Portland Winter Hawks and Vancouver Giants — teams which had already dealt players to the Bruins. The Bruins were able to select three players from the Tri City Americans.

Why would they take 6 20's in a year that is overloaded with 20's......

Unless of course they already have a trade lined up.

I am thinking Spurgeon could fetch a hefty price on the trade market.

And witht he expansion draft now done the off-season trade market has started as both the Rebels and Americans have made moves already today.

Yay for off-season stuff to talk about.

Why would they take 6 20's in a year that is overloaded with 20's......If even one doesn't report/winds up in the AHL, they still have their maximum of 5. Probably a smart move given the talent level of a few of them.

I guess, but there are still going to be a lot of good 20's on the open market come cut down day.

Just seems like a waste to me.

Isn't Sather involved with this team? He could have some inside info from the Oil.

Yes both Sather and Burke are part owners.

I posted this article Pre-Draft on the Tips forum:http://www.whlfans.ca/showthread.php?t=7132

Interesting comments about the Tips possibilities of executing a trade with the Bruins. Maybe something is happening behind the scenes...

"Everett could be more involved in the action today than just losing a player. With potential overagers John Lammers and Karel Hromas likely to play professionally next season, the Silvertips have just two overagers - defensemen Cody Thoring and Jason Fransoo - lined up for next season, leaving one spot open. Everett could fill that spot by having Chilliwack select an overager from another team, then arranging a trade with the Bruins."

Kind of depressing, but oh well. We do have Leedahl and Bertow coming up next year!

I think Bruce Hamilton left Spurgeon unprotected because he feels Tyler will move on to pro next year. That would be a kick in the teeth for the Rockets if he stays in the Dub.
