So who will go first? Johnson? Staal? Kessel? Different teams have different needs and viewpoints on prospects.

With that in mind, the following is TSN.ca's mock first round for non-playoff teams at the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. As with every other year, it's pretty much a crap shoot.

Any three or four players have a shot at being taken by a given team, and this mock draft is, at best, a guess at the general area where a player may go. Hey, your guess is as good as ours.

The draft order for the 16 teams that made the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs is based on the playoff results, and will be determined at the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Final.

Note: Mock trades are not projected in this scenario.

Check back for updates as the draft approaches. You can watch the event live on TSN, Saturday June 24 at 6pm et/3pm pt.

The First 14 Picks
Selection Number Team Player
1 St. Louis Blues Erik Johnson
Note: The Blues traded Chris Pronger last summer, but will get a great future blueliner in Johnson.

2 Pittsburgh Penguins Jordan Staal
Note: The thought of Crosby, Malkin and Staal down the middle is too enticing to pass up.

3 Chicago Blackhawks Phil Kessel
Note: The Hawks need a player who can help sell tickets, and Kessel could provide some excitement.

4 Washington Capitals Nicklas Backstrom
Note: Backstrom, a centre, could one day form a lethal line with Alexander Ovechkin.

5 Boston Bruins Jonathan Toews
Note: The Bruins need a bit of everything, and the North Dakota forward is a very good start.

6 Columbus Blue Jackets Jiri Tlusty
Note: With Nash and Zherdev already up, the Jackets could use someone to develop slowly.

7 NY Islanders Derick Brassard
Note: Brassard brings a good skill set that would suit first-year GM Neil Smith well.

8 Phoenix Coyotes Bryan Little
Note: Don't let his 5'10 frame fool you, he's a terrific scorer and playmaker.

9 Minnesota Wild Kyle Okposo
Note: The Shattuck St. Marys grad would be a perfect fit in the state of hockey-mad Minnesota.

10 Florida Panthers Michael Frolik
Note: At 10th overall, he could be the steal of the draft with his speed, hockey sense and skill.

11 Los Angeles Kings Bob Sanguinetti
Note: Sanguinetti would compliment a pretty young Kings team, especially on the blueline.

12 Atlanta Thrashers Peter Mueller
Note: With or without Marc Savard, Atlanta needs to develop a skilled centre.

13 Toronto Maple Leafs James Sheppard
Note: Sheppard will bring size and a solid two-way game for the Maple Leafs.

14 Vancouver Canucks Artem Anisimov
Note: An early pick, but the Canucks may have the patience to develop him into a future cornerstone.

Find it a bit a of a stretch that Mueller would drop that far in the draft considering he has been considered a top 5 pick all year.

Find it a bit a of a stretch that Mueller would drop that far in the draft considering he has been considered a top 5 pick all year. Not that he isn't a heck of a player, but even at 17 he really is a man among boys in this league, and I would have expected him to have a 100+pt season as such (especially on a division leading team), rather than the 50 or so points he had. That being said, I would be surprised if he dropped below 7th.

They have done another mock draft, and the changes are surprising to say the least.

Here is the new TSN Mock draft for the Entire First round. Most notable about WHL prospects, Mueller in their first mock went at #12, now moved up to #7.

The draft order for the 16 teams that made the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs is based on the playoff results, and were determined after the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup. As champions, their pick (owned by the Blues) goes to No. 30.

Note: Mock trades are not projected in this scenario.

Check back for updates as the draft approaches. You can watch the event live on TSN, Saturday June 24 at 6pm et/3pm pt.

The First 30 Picks
Selection Number Team Player
1 St. Louis Blues Erik Johnson
Note: The Blues traded Chris Pronger last summer, but will get a great future blueliner in Johnson.

2 Pittsburgh Penguins Jordan Staal
Note: The thought of Crosby, Malkin and Staal down the middle is too enticing to pass up.

3 Chicago Blackhawks Phil Kessel
Note: The Hawks need a player who can help sell tickets, and Kessel could provide some excitement.

4 Washington Capitals Nicklas Backstrom

5 Boston Bruins Jonathan Toews
Note: The Bruins need a bit of everything, and the North Dakota forward is a very good start.

6 Columbus Blue Jackets Jiri Tlusty
Note: Tlusty has seen his stock rise dramatically, and the Jackets could benefit.

7 NY Islanders Peter Mueller
Note: Mueller brings a good skill set that would suit first-year GM Neil Smith well.

8 Phoenix Coyotes Derick Brassard
Note: Letting go of Briere hurt; Brassard could be their redemption.

9 Minnesota Wild Kyle Okposo
Note: The Shattuck St. Marys grad would be a perfect fit in the state of hockey-mad Minnesota.

10 Florida Panthers Michael Frolik
Note: At 10th overall, he could be the steal of the draft with his speed, hockey sense and skill.

11 Los Angeles Kings Bob Sanguinetti
Note: Sanguinetti would compliment a young Kings team, especially on the blueline.

12 Atlanta Thrashers Bryan Little
Note: He's a small skilled centre with an added element of toughness.

13 Toronto Maple Leafs James Sheppard
Note: Sheppard will bring size and a solid two-way game for the Maple Leafs.

14 Vancouver Canucks Artem Anisimov
Note: The Canucks have had plenty of success with European players.

15 Tampa Bay Lightning Leland Irving
Note: The Lightning need to develop goalies, and Irving's stock is rising.

16 Montreal Canadiens Mark Mitera
Note: The Habs need to develop good, defensive blueliners, and he fits.

17 Minnesota Wild (from Edmonton) Yuri Alexandrov
Note: The Wild go off the chart a bit, but he'll stabilize the blueline.

18 Colorado Avalanche Michael Grabner
Note: The Avs need scoring, and he provides it with flair.

19 Anaheim Ducks Chris Summers
Note: Brian Burke takes the best defenceman available at this point.

20 San Jose Sharks Ty Wishart
Note: The Sharks need to develop a good, stay-at-home stopper.

21 New York Rangers Nick Foligno
Note: The Sudbury Wolves forward would bring a great work ethic with him - just like father Mike.

22 Philadelphia Flyers Chris Stewart
Note: A big and tough forward who plays well physically? Sounds like a good Bob Clarke pick to us.

23 Washington Capitals (from Nashville) Ivan Vishnevsky
Note: He's a future power-play quarterback who could feed the puck to you-know-who.

24 Buffalo Sabres David Fischer
Note: The Sabres need defence, and have loved drafting college talent over the last few years.

25 New Jersey Devils Trevor Lewis
Note: The Devils love their U.S. talent, and Lewis is a great sleeper.

26 Calgary Flames Claude Giroux
Note: The Flames need scoring, and Giroux lit it up for Gatineau in his rookie season.

27 Dallas Stars Alexander Vasyunov
Note: With Modano in his last years, the Stars need to develop more scoring for the future.

28 Ottawa Senators Jonathan Bernier
Note: Jeff Glass is already in the system, but another developing goalie can't hurt.

29 Detroit Red Wings Patrick Berglund
Note: A solid talent who could fit well with Swedish teammates in Detroit.

30 St. Louis Blues (from Carolina) Cory Emmerton
Note: The Blues also need to build up front, and Emmerton is a good playmaker.

^ agreed :thumb:

it kinda feels like they are selecting other players to pretend to be different or something, but you never know how the actual draft will flow.

Who would have predicted Carey Price going sixth over-all last year? (i certainly didn't)

If we don't get GM's tonight I think it's a no go.
