CANUCKS SIGN THREE WHL STARS - The Vancouver Canucks on Monday signed a trio of WHL stars - Alexander Edler, Jannik Hansen and Shaun Heshka - to entry-level NHL contracts.

Edler, 20, was the Canucks' third-round pick (91st overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. The 6' 3", 194-pound defenseman from Ostersund, Sweden spent the 2005-06 season with the Kelowna Rockets, scoring 13 goals and 53 points in 62 games - tops among all WHL rookie defensemen. Edler, the Rockets' first-round pick in the 2005 CHL Import Draft, played for Modo in the Swedish Junior League in 2004-05.

Hansen, 20, was the Canucks' ninth-round (287th overall) selection in the 2004 NHL draft. The 6' 0", 190-pound winger from Herlev, Denmark spent the 2005-06 season with the Portland Winter Hawks, tallying 24 goals and 64 points in 64 games to lead all WHL rookies in scoring. Hansen was the Winter Hawks' first-round pick in the 2005 CHL Import Draft.

The Canucks also officially announced the signing of Shaun Heshka, 20, after inking the 6' 1", 195-pound free agent rearguard to an entry-level contract earlier in July. Heshka, a product of Melville, SK, spent his entire three-year WHL career with the Everett Silvertips, helping the team to two U.S. Division crowns in the team's three-year existence. In 2005-06, Heshka tallied 10 goals and 59 points in 66 games, putting him second among all WHL defensemen in scoring, and earning him a spot on the Western Conference Second All-Star Team.
