- Canada’s Under-18 team struck Junior World Cup Gold, beating the United States 3-0 in the Gold medal final at the 2006 Milan Hlinka Memorial tournament in Breclav, Czech Republic on Sunday.

Brett Sonne scored twice, including the game-winner, and earned Player of the Game honors for pacing Canada to their third consecutive Gold medal at the Junior World Cup and their 10th in the last eleven summer tournaments.

Sonne, who plays for the Calgary Hitmen, opened the scoring midway through the first period with Canada on a two-man advantage. The 17-year-old from Maple Ridge, B.C., added a second – his fifth of the tournament - in the second period.

Medicine Hat Tigers forward Tyler Ennis tallied Canada’s third goal in the third period and assisted on Sonne’s second-period marker, while Red Deer Rebels forward Brandon Sutter drew an assist on Ennis’ goal.

Peterborough Petes goaltender Trevor Cann stopped all 20 shots he faced in the contest to record the victory and the shutout.

A total of 13 WHL players were on the roster of the two Jr. World Cup finalists. Team Canada’s Gold medal-winning team boasted 11 players who play in the WHL, while the United States also had two players who play in the WHL.
