The Western Hockey League announced late this afternoon that the
19-year old Okotoks, Alberta product has been suspended indefinitely, pending
further review of Sunday night's incident involving Jordan McGillivray
of the Regina Pats at the Keystone Centre.

Webb recieved a third period match penalty during that game for
cross-checking the Pats forward in the face. The incident followed an earlier
altercation between the two players in which the Brandon defenceman was
the victim of an unpenalized head-butt from the Regina left-winger, who
left Mark Deralgo with a fractured vertabrae in his neck during a
pre-season game last September. That hit ended Derlago's 2004-05 season and
resulted in a 3-game suspension for the 19-year old Regina product.

In addition to suspending Webb, the league continues to review the
aftermath of Sunday's game, in which Regina Pats' general manager Brent
Parker blasted both the WHL and the Wheat Kings.

Parker, who was fined $1,000 two weeks ago for publicly criticizing the
league's officials, could be in line for more penalties.

"Obviously, there's certain comments that should be made internally
within the league," commissioner Ron Robison told the Regina Leader Post
on Monday. "Comments of any public nature are inappropriate at this
time."

The Pats and Wheat Kings are to meet three times next week - Wednesday
night at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Friday night at Brandon's Keystone
Centre and Sunday in Regina.

They say that it is hard to tell what to call the suspension because it is hard to determine when he got cut...I hope this doesn't mean if the league rules the cut was made after the cross check, the suspension will be much less, because what they should be looking at is the intent of oneplayer cross-checking another player in the head. That isn't tollerated in other leagues, whether it be pros or local minor hockey. If he gets off easy because the league ruled the cut came after the cross check, then I will be dissapointed.

I just really don't like what Webb did.

The interesting thing is... If this had happened in the BCHL, we would be looking at a 8 game min. suspension for a delibrate hit to the head causing injury.
I thought the WHL was suppose to start calling that about two years ago, a minor for a hit to the head. That lasted for two games. How many concussions are there in the league now (8 to 10)? The WHL needs to clean that up. I like what they do in the BCHL, a hit to the head also comes with a 10 minute misconduct. And if an injury occurs, then the player is dealt with severly.
I don't think that Webb will be suspended for more than 3 games. Now Byers from PA, is a different story. I really hope the Brandon player is OK. A check from behind is real scary stuff.
