Still a lot to learn

Fans received a full taste of the new era of hockey Wednesday at the Kinplex.
The Medicine Hat Tigers defeated the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors 5-2 in Western Hockey League exhibition action. All the games’ goals were scored on the power play as the game featured 40 total penalties.
Medicine Hat was unofficially 5 of 22 on the power play, but they would have had a 23rd chance as the Warriors were called for a minor infraction at the 20-minute mark of the third period. The Warriors were 2 of 13 on the power play.
A spirited fight between Tigers centre Matt Lowry and Warriors left-winger Garrett Robinson were the only offsetting calls in the game. As per exhibition rules, both players received fighting majors and game misconducts.
During the game, there was some groaning over the number of penalties that were being called due to the league’s officials calling everything to NHL standard. Twice in the first period the teams played three-on-three hockey.
“The referees are given their mandate, and they are going to make the calls,” said Tigers head coach and general manager Willie Desjardins. “You have to make sure that your intent is to play the puck.
“If you can get puck possession, it is going to make other teams take penalties on us. You work on puck possession. We want to play our game. We want to use our speed.”
The penalties in Wednesday’s game were called by an experienced and veteran crew, which are arguably as good as a unit as you will find in any WHL contest. Hatter Chris Savage and Cory McLean were the referees, while Hatter Greg Sauerer and Darren Holeha were the linesmen.
“It is quite an adjustment you are going to have to get use to,” said Tigers overage left-winger Chris Stevens, who had a goal and an assist in the win. “We know it is going to be called like that.
“We just have to be more disciplined. It is kind of learning process. We haven’t quite caught on yet.”
The Warriors drew first blood in Wednesday’s contest on the power play as centre Neal Prokop deflected a point shot from rearguard Chad Suer by Tigers goaltender Blaine Neufeld.
The Tigers responded with two power-play goals of their own before the period ended. First, Jordan Hickmott slipped a goal in from a bad angle by the side of the net past Warriors goaltender Evan Karembelas.
Then Stevens scored to put the Tigers up 2-1. He gathered a juicy rebound from a Lee Morrow point shot and fired the puck over top of a fallen Karembelas.
In the second period, the two teams proceeded to exchange power-play goals. First, Slovakian import Jakub Rumpel connected on a cross-crease pass from Tyler Swystun to put the Tigers up 3-1.
Moose Jaw answered back with a goal from 16-year-old right-winger Jason Grecica to cut the gap to 3-2.
Centre Brennan Bosch and Hickmott scored in the third for the Tigers to round out the game’s scoring.
Neufeld started the game for the Tigers in goal. He played the first half of the game stopping 13 of 14 shots fired his way. Ryan Holfeld, a 17-year-old rookie, went the rest of the way stopping 11 of 12 shots fired his way.
Karembelas played the whole game for Moose Jaw turning away 41 of 46 shots fired his way.
Puck possession hurt the Warriors a lot in the third as they surrendered nine power play chances to the Tigers, while only getting one in return in the frame. Besides trying to work on puck possession Warriors head coach Steve Young said his club has to work on positioning with the way penalties are being called.
“Puck possession is key. Body positioning is very key,” said Young. “Instead of chasing guys down, you almost have to get in another lane and cut them off before they get to the net.
“It (the game) is going to change for players, and it is going to change for coaches. I think the teams that adjust early will be the teams that come out on top.”
The Tigers close out their exhibition schedule by playing the Red Deer Rebels in Carstairs Saturday.
