Veteran forward Chris Ray has been named captain of the Kelowna Rockets.

Ray, 20, in his last season of junior eligibility, just returned to the team after taking part in the Vancouver Canucks rookie and main camps.

He says it's an honour to be selected by his teammates to replace Tyler Spurgeon as captain of the club.

"It's awesome --- you look at the wall of captains, there's some big shoes to fill with the George's and the Palin's. It's a huge honour to be part of that tradition," says Ray.

He says he won't be as vocal as Tyler or Josh and will lead by example.

With his linemates gone from last season, Ray will find himself playing on a new line this year.

Ray will lead the Rockets into their regular season opener Thursday night, when they take on the expansion Bruins in Chilliwack.

Rockets Notes: Defenceman Clayton Barthel has been released by the NHL Tampa Bay Lightning. He should be back in town Wednesday night. Kyle Cumiskey remains in the camp of the Colorado Avalanche. He was named the third star in Tuesday's exhibition game with Dallas. Defenceman Tyler Myers will have his cast removed Friday and he should be ready to play within a week.
