Brandon, Manitoba – Several members of the 1967-68 team will be recognized before Friday’s Western Hockey League regular season opener at the Keystone Centre, the Wheat Kings announced Thursday.

The ceremony, to be held before Friday’s game against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors, will mark the official kick-off to Brandon’s 40th Anniversary Season in the Western League.

The ’67-68 team was led by general manager Glen Lawson and head coach Elliott Chorley and featured the following players – Ted Temple, Bill Mikkelson, Terry Marshall, Mark Kennedy, Jim Wilton, Bob Young, Jack Wells, Rick Ewacha, Ray Brownlee, Terry Hart, Roy McLauchlan, Larry Romanychuk, Bruce Bonk, Cal Swenson, Dan McPherson, Jack Borotsik and Ken Johnson.

During their inaugural season in the WCHL, the Wheat Kings compiled a 21-33-6 record, finishing in eighth place. Borotsik led the club in scoring with 85 points including thirty-six goals. Even though a number of players went on to professional hockey, only two of them were chosen in the National Hockey League Amateur Draft – Romanychuk (Chicago Black Hawks, 1969) and Marshall (St. Louis Blues, 1970).

Of the original players, several will be in attendance Friday night including Marshall, Borotsik, Temple and McPherson.

Although the Wheat Kings were established in the forties and played for several seasons in both the Manitoba and Saskatchewan Junior Hockey Leagues, it wasn’t until 1967 – the second year of existence for the WCHL – that Brandon joined Flin Flon, Estevan, Edmonton, Moose Jaw, Regina, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Calgary and Weyburn.

Since joining the league thirty-nine years ago, the Wheat Kings have won 1,278 games, lost 1,281, tied 185 times and lost eight games in overtime during regular season play. Their best season ever came in 1978-79 when Brandon set a WHL record with an impressive record of 58-5-9, good for 125 points.
