Wednesday's WHL Roundup

(CP) - Often after a game, a coach will state that his team would have won the game is they had gotten "the bounce".

For Cory Clouston and his Kootenay Ice, the puck went their way on Wednesday night as Roman Polak's fluke goal 12:04 into third period was the difference as they edged the Thunderbirds 4-3. Polak's routine dump into the Seattle zone hit the boards and bounced into the goal as Thunderbirds goalie Bryan Bridges skated behind the net. No Kootenay player was in even that end of the rink when the puck entered the vacated goal.

Elsewhere in the Western Hockey League on Wednesday, it was: Brandon 2, Portland 1; Calgary 4, Saskatoon 3; Kelowna 1, Prince George 0; and Swift Current at Moose Jaw (ppd., weather).

At Seattle, the Thunderbirds took an early lead when Lladislav Scurko scored to extend his point-scoring streak to nine games.

Mike Busto, Ryan Russell and Dale Mahovsky replied before the period ended for Kootenay (27-13-4-0).

Clayton Barthel and Zack FitzGerald scored in the second frame for Seattle (29-11-0-1).

Rockets 1, Cougars 0

At Kelowna, B.C., Mike Card scored the winner 29 seconds into the second period as the Rockets edged Prince George.

Derek Yeomans turned aside 18 shots for Kelowna (25-10-9-1) to record his fourth shutout of the season, while Scott Bowles, newly-acquired from Calgary, made 32 saves for Prince George (18-22-3-1).

Hitmen 4, Blades 3

At Calgary, Konstantin Pushkarev scored twice and had an assist to lead the Hitmen to a win over Saskatoon.

Tyrel Lucas, with a goal and two assists, and Dustin Kohn also scored for Calgary (20-15-6-2).

Joe Barnes had a goal and an assist for Saskatoon (24-11-5-4), while Ryan Menei and Aaron Bader also scored for the Blades.

Wheat Kings 2, Winter Hawks 1

At Brandon, Man., Eric Fehr's league-leading 36th goal of the season gave the Wheat Kings victory over Portland.

Corey Courchene also scored for the Brandon (21-13-5-1).

Cody McLeod replied for Portland (18-20-3-4).

Broncos at Warriors (ppd.)

Swift Current at Moose Jaw was postponed due to the severe weather, with the match re-scheduled for March 11.
