Pats fire out of the starting gate

The Regina Pats doubled their fun on the opening night of the WHL regular season.

"It's nice to get that first win and to get it (away from home)," Pats GM Brent Parker said following Friday's 5-2 win over the host Swift Current Broncos. "We had trouble early last year winning on the road so it's nice to start with a division game and get a win on the road."

The Pats scored the first two goals of the game and eventually took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission on goals by Kyle Ross (shorthanded), Derek Hulak and Garrett Festerling.

After a scoreless second frame, Spencer McAvoy made it 3-2 early in the third, but Hulak added his second of the night to make it 4-2.

"He's such a smart player and he makes guys around him better," Parker said of Hulak, a 17-year-old rookie. "He's going to get his points and get his goals in this league because he puts himself in the right position. And he can shoot it. It was a great start for him. I don't think that will be the last two-goal game of his career."

Rookie Jordan Eberle rounded out the scoring for the Pats with his first WHL goal -- the third power-play marker of the night for Regina. Justin Bernhardt contributed three assists, while Craig Schira added two helpers. Ross and Festerling also had assists.

"We're going to have to score by committee; everyone has to pitch in," noted Parker. "We had two 20-year-olds score and a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old. It's nice when it's spread out that way."

Jeremy Schenderling had the other goal for Swift Current, which got 27 saves for veteran goalie Kyle Moir. Linden Rowat got the start for Regina and made 20 saves.

"He was good," said Parker. "He had no chance on either goal. He was solid and challenged and looked comfortable in the net."

Regina's home-opener is slated for tonight against the Saskatoon Blades. Swift Current hits the road to take on the Prince Albert Raiders.

"It's always tough to start that first game at home," Parker said of the Broncos. "I thought we settled down a little quicker than they did. Now we have to go through it in our building and we'll have some young guys with a lot of jitters. We'll rely on those older guys to settle them down a little bit."

Elsewhere on Friday, the Brandon Wheat Kings opened their regular season with a 3-2 win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.

Andrew Clark scored the winning on a power play with 3:26 left in regulation. Mark Derlago and Jeff Topilko also scored for the Wheat Kings, who got 28 saves from Tyler Plante.

Jason Bast and Ian McKenzie replied for the Warriors, who got 18 saves from Joey Perricone.

EXTRAS: The Pats went 3-for-10 on the power play. Swift Current was 0-for-7 . . . Regina's scratches were D Colten Teubert, D Spencer Fraipont, C Levi Lind, C Jason MacDonald and LW Scott Brownlee.

Its nice to see the young guys are scoring too. I know its early, but we are off to a good start. Hopefully we can come out with another win tonite at home.
